Can I say a big thanks to all those that have given guidance and contributed on this post. I've had a P38 for a few years now and don't mind doing a bit of DIY mechanics on it. But this is the first time I have done anything to my 2012 L322. With the pictures and advice, the fix took me maybe 15 mins. Even torqued the nut up, just incase.
Many thanks.

I tackled this job today having sourced the correct O rings. A massive thank you to all who contributed to this as it made the job a lot easier to tackle, in fact the hardest part for me was trying to find the right tools buried deep in my shed.

I notice that a few people in this post have used blue hylomar when replacing the seals in the oil cooler. I take it that it’s a thin bead either side of where the gasket sits.

Would you advise me to do the same when replacing my gaskets as I see there is no mention in the WM about any additional sealant being used.

I fitted each gasket to its housing then coated the protruding gasket with sealant.

Thanks Graeme, I’ll give that a go, don’t fancy having to pull it all apart again once it’s done Thumbs Up

Got around to sorting the gaskets on my oil cooler this weekend was paranoid about breaking the coolant hose at the front that seems to be a known brittle item so took my time. Found the right rear plenum hose ( one of the four) hadn’t been fitted properly, looked fine from above but hadn’t seated correctly underneath, needless to say the right hand bank as you look at the engine was covered in sticky black crud. Managed to get the oil cooler out with no real problems and it’s just as well as it was obviously leaking. The old gaskets were hard and flat whereas the new ones were pliable and sat slightly proud once installed. As advised on here I also applied some hylomar and refitted making sure that all bolts were torqued to the correct nm. I also cleaned the throttle body and MAF which were both filthy. I contemplated cleaning out the plenum too but the crud was thick and sticky so not really practical on the driveway. Car is running fine with no noticeable difference so it’s a case of checking for any further leaks next week to make sure all is ok.

could one check for such a leak from underneath the car as an alternative to removing the pollen filter housing etc
The pollen filter is very simple and quick to remove, as is the engine cover, after which checking using a mirror is also quick and simple.

The pipe is the centre oil feed pipe and has been superseded, as has the original pipe for the 4.4 in the L405 and the o-rings don't appear to be available as spare parts. The seals may have been replaced with appropriate Viton versions leading to the new pipe part numbers. Replacing with general purpose o-rings is likely to be only a temporary fix.

Edit: Looking at standard O-ring sizes my guess they're either BS204 or BS205 - I can get Viton BS204 locally. However if metric size (most likely) then many size possibilities.

How hard is it to change the other end (at the Turbos)?

Just ordered a cheap bag of Viton rings which were 1.78CS x 8.73ID to have in for when it starts leaking. As it has been commented on the 9 x 1.8 seemed tight to fit so by my reckoning losing 0.02mm off the section and 0.27mm off the ID might make them slide in a little easier. These were the closest size I could see on the site I was using. www.simplybearings.co.uk

Just for the record. I have just replaced my O rings with the above size. Checked for leaks before I put the air inlet thingy back on and it was dripping straight away. I've ordered some Vitron 9.00ID X 2.0c/s and see if they are a better fit. 2012 L322 4.4 TDV8

No need to disturb the other ends of the pipe unless wanting to replace the pipe.

I have a leak in that area (secondary turbo / passenger side UK) and thinking it could well be the o-ring at the turbo end.

Can't see it but if the one at the top goes (which I've changed) , the one on the turbo would be a prime suspect.

Getting to it will be another thing. Thoughts?

. Cheers, Greg

Greg,
The top one must get much hotter and therefore more likely to go brittle and fail, unless you are constantly getting the revs up chasing through the streets of London. Rolling with laughter

Thanks Mike, although my secondary turbo isn’t called on that often, manifold temps alone make me wonder about that o-ring the more I think about it. Just think about DPF regeneration temps and bear in mind I am doing that quite regularly.

. Cheers, Greg
