Locking nut removal / swearathon!

Went to take my wheels off the other day, only to find that one of the locking wheel nuts was goosed and had been 'gunned' on.

Swearing session one involved trying to hammer the key on wonky so that it would grip. The problem was that the outer section of the bolt was spinning, whilst the inner bit stayed put! No luck that time.

Tried a tyre bay but they just did the same as me, only with more colourful swearing Shocked No luck there.

Tried 2 different garages on the way home from the tyre bay. Both shyed away from it as a job because it was too small to be worth any real money to them, but obviously, a pig of a job. They suggested I had a go myself, so I did.

I started by taking off the spinning outer section of the nut. I tried drilling this but then ended up cutting a cross in it with an angle grinder.

I then tried hitting the inner bit with a cold chisel. This sadly just involved a lot more swearing...

Lastly I took out a hammer drill and chiselled a line into the top of the nut (like a screw slot). I then attached a spanner to the chisel, and a scaff bar to the spanner and hey presto! One mangled chewed up nut (and a damaged wheel unfortunately.

It has to be said. What a Censored design of locking wheel nut!

This is what was left (it WAS a standard LR nut!)

been there and done it..used to run a tyre center and this was a common problem, the easiest method to remove lock nuts was the 'anti clockwise socket' that you placed over the offending locknut..

funny enough my lock nuts on mine dont have any spinning outer bit ... ... - .- -.

It's not supposed to spin Stan! It's probably a sercurity feature to stop you just banging a socket on. It's designed so that your locking nut has to be holding both parts of it to work. Too much pressure on just the outer section and the grip on it fails and gives you a nightmare job!

If your car has standard LR locking nuts then it has a bit that can spin (if it fails)

I did hope for a 'special tool' at the tyre bay. Thought it would be bread and butter to them? My Previous RR's!

These are the exact same nuts that I've had on all my previous FFRR's but didn't notice until this one failed, that they were in two parts.

The outer bit is either stainless or an alloy and the inner bit is softer mild steel. Both have matching tooth holes, until it spins....

Have a look next time you take one off (carefully!) My Previous RR's!
