Locking Wheel Nut - How to remove a damaged one

Hi all,

I had the dreaded 'what monkey tightened this locking wheel nut up' moment this week and thought the following may help someone in the same position I found myself in.

So, genuine Land Rover code 'E' locking wheel nut set on my Fatty. Rear near side locking wheel nut stuck fast. The wheel nut is in two parts and the outer shiny cap part is turning against the inner part causing the locking tabs to not line up. Common issue apparently. Looking inside reveals burred edges around the slots the locking tool fits into. It's probably been spun on by an Air Gun/Gorilla at sometime destroying the slots with too much torque. The rear brake pads were last changed by a Land Rover Dealership just before I bought it in September last year...

You will need -

Patience
Dremel drill and 38mm steel cutting disk
A steady hand
Chisel
Lump Hammer
Locking wheel nut removal kit
Breaker Bar
Suitable protection equipment for your eyes and hands. I'm not responsible for you lopping off a finger or getting something in your eye - that's for you to decide.

So, first point of call. A Dremmel with a 38mm Steel cutting disk on it -

Very carefully cut a slot across the face of the locking wheel nut avoiding touching the alloy wheel. You'll need it running quite fast as the steel cap is pretty hard -

Once you've cut as far as you can, place a suitable sized chisel in the slot and give it the opportunity to meet its maker...

....with Land Rover tool number 1 (aka a nice lump hammer) -

After a few suitable ahem, 'taps' it will break away - hope you've got your eye protection on, just in case. If you're unsure of your Fatties whereabouts lately, wear a mask too. Stay Safe -

Remove as much of it as you can -

Your Wheel nut will now resemble something like this - gnarled and horrible -

Next step is to use the socket in a kit to remove the bolt. I picked this up on Amazon for £22 -

Once on the remains of the locking nut they 'dig'' onto it as an anti clockwise force is applied. Multiple sizes for different nuts -

I used the 17mm one on the stump and hammered it on until it was against the collar of the nut - you will feel it bottom out -

Now, get a suitable bar on it and with the right amount of pressure you will hear a pleasing 'crack' as the socket digs it and breaks the loving relationship the wheel had with the locking wheel nut. Take it easy at first to give the socket time to dig in properly -

Clean up the area, Have a cup of tea and maybe a biscuit. You've done well and its 1-0 to you - to avoid a repeat get on the internet and buy yourself 4 new wheel studs and replace the other 3. Throw your lockers away!

You know it makes sense.

2010 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Santorini Black

I had the same issue on my previous TDV8 with a tyre place who couldn't get the locking wheel nut off and said I'd have to get it cut off. I wasn't convinced so removed another wheel's locking nut and had a closer look.

I discovered that it wasn't necessary to cut it off and after spending a few minutes patiently realigning the outer (spinning) cover with the inner notches the locking wheel nut then solidly engaged. So while the method above can be used it's not always necessary to cut anything off.

The method to realign is:

1. Test the locking wheel nut.
2. If it doesn't fit then spin the outer cover a few degrees and retest being careful not to nudge the outer cover.
3. If it doesn't fit then repeat step 2

You need to be patient with it but it doesn't take long.

Hi WB,

Yes, agree and had tried that - I even bought a new locking wheel nut removal key from MPS Trading to try that as my original one was badly burred in places. I could spin the outer part around to the get the outer and inner lugs to line up but it still wouldn't budge It just lifted off every time I tried to undo it - it was really on there tight and the damage to the lugs was pretty bad. I guess its a case of each nut has its own level of damage and corresponding fix.
