Possible BCM replacement

I have a had a couple of ongoing issues with my L322 that have progressively got worse.
The first fault I have had was with the transfer box motor the display on the dash keeps fagging up with "Transfer Box Neutral"
this normally is sorts it self out by switching it off and back on.
the ethe other day I had and EAS fault flag up I cleared the fault and everything seemed to be ok. I left the car sitting around for just over a week and the battery was flat I thought it might be the dash cam that was permanently on as the AA man said it shouldn't go flat that quick.
I have had all of the above faults happen a different times but if you add them altogether is seams to point towards a BCM failure. I have listed all of the faults below. I guess the main question has anybody else had this issue and dose the BCM need programing or is it plug and play?

I doubt it's the BCM....

ABS-Brake Module

0x29 Steering angle plausibility

Dying clock spring or steering wheel not straight

ATC-Heat / Cool

0x30 Air quality sensor line fault

Air sensor is on offside of radiator, most have this fault it controls the auto circulate function of the HVAC

EAS-Suspension

0x32 CAN bus Fault

All early L322's have this fault showing it means nothing

ECM-Engine (DDE4)
Don't know about these, mine was petrol..!!

P0380-80 Glow plug relay failure - glow relay defective

P0401-20 extended fault path exhaust gas recirculation governor deviation - negative deviation

IP-Instrument Pack

0xBD EBV function fault received from ABS ECU

Again all early 322's have this...

0xBF Instrument Pack checksum incorrect

Showing that the dash is dying....

LCM-Light Control v12+

0x57 Air suspension active/inactive

Can indicate a suspension fault but again a lot of the earlier ones have this...

PATS-AntiTheft

0x83 Key 8 - Random code tolerance increased

Early warning to failing steering column lock...

TBOX-Transfer Case

0x5223 Noise on actuator signal (0x5223)

Early warning of failure of hi-lo motor (try putting in and out of low box numerious times to clean the actuator ribbon...

BMW developed the early L322, electronics are mostly X5 stuff, they then sold Land Rover to Ford in 2000, Ford finished it off but were too cheap to get BMW to erase spurious faults so a lot of faults are built in from the factory...!!! Pete

Get the faults read, I'd guess you have a sensor out somewhere, I'd guess an ABS sensor as the fatty uses these for speed monitoring and that's one reason all of those won't work... Pete

Just had the same dash faults on my TD6 for a few times , flat battery charged back up and same next trip , battery going flat due to failing alternator . Eventually the red battery indicator came on , just got home and alternator dead .

Just a guess but the only one I don't recognise is

0x29 Steering angle plausibility

Don't think mine ever had that, maybe the clock spring is worn out... could ask Gap, Pat knows what most fault codes actually mean...

Can't remember if mine showed specific ABS sensor faults, I would have thought it did, easy enough to unplug one in the wheel arch in the little black box that holds the plugs, then see if it throws a code... Thumbs Up

Good Luck Pete

To check the steering angle sensor disconnect the battery following the disconnect procedure in WIKI. Then as soon as the battery has been reconnected do the resetting, with the engine running, turn the wheel fully from one lock to the other.

Sorry about teaching you to suck eggs about resetting the steering angle sensor. Sad It was just to cover all the points.

If that still shows the fault then check if HDC is still working. If it isn't then I would suspect, as Pete says, that the squib (rotary coupler) is defective as HDC is affected.

Still check with Patrick at Gap the meaning of the code.

For information, I had to change my rotary coupler last week. I got one from e-bay for £40 plus postage as opposed to over £200 new.

If you do have to go down that road ensure that the rotary coupler is complete. I saw one listed which had the centre cap remove and the ribbon connectors were not there. That would have been a problem. You don't want to take it apart.

Some are listed with the switch arms and some the bare rotary coupler. Either would be fine as the switches are very easy to unclip and transfer. The part no is 8H4213N064BA (it has BMW on it!). If you have a heated steering wheel make sure that it is shown as for a heated wheel.

As Pete has said, and reiterated above, check with Gap.

It isn't a huge job to do but hopefully one that isn't required

Good luck. Thumbs Up John

The fault is not continuous I can drive the car to work about 6 miles but it only on the journey home that the fault flags up I think it might be down to my battery being low as had the AA jumpstart 2 weeks ago but the in-car volt meter only reads 12.6 volts when off and 14.2 when running but it's strange how it does it when the car has been driven for a bit.

My voltages were the same. I know it should read nearer 14.7v as it does on my other vehicles. My alternator was failing under load/speed. As mentioned , I had all the fault lights/symptoms that you are currently having before finally on one journey the red battery indicator flashed quickly a few times before coming on continuously.

A bit of an update on the fault I didn't realise that the fault clears on it's own when I switch the ignition off as have been clearing the fault before I have switch off the car. Is the steering angle sensor on the steering wheel end or the rack end, as this is one of the fault that has showed.

SAS bottom of steering column near your feet.
