Hi all....
so.... car is a tdv8 4.4

keeps coming up restricted performance, some times turning the engine off resets it.
put the diagnostics on it and got:

L322 - Range Rover 2011
Vehicle scanned on 04-06-2020 10:34
Using IIDTool BT V4.0 B2691

PCM-Engine TDV8 4.4L

P040D-00 (2C) Exhaust gas recirculation temperature sensor A - circuit high
( on 04-06-2020 09:36:53 at 179839 km )

I can reset it and off we go again but the fault keeps coming back and putting me into restricted performance.

Ive read some of the other bits on this on the forum but my code has a 2C after it and everyone else has a 2F
Is this relevant do you think

Hi Andy, assume you have seen my guide.
Yes the code is slightly different.
Best advice is to find the connector to the exhaust manifold sensor, unplug it and check for errors.

However your restricted may well be unrelated to the code.

The most common cause of restricted is air system leaks.

Yes, I did read your guide. was even starting to source the tools the you listed !!

Im starting to think its a coincidental fault as Ive just taken the car out again and now have the 'standard' P040D-00 2f fault that I've always seemed to have.

when the restricted performance comes up no other faults are shown. a clear all gets it going again as does turning the ignition off and on.

A while ago I had a split inlet manifold that didn't show up a fault code but really screwed the engine and the DPF up.
will pop the bonnet up and have a poke about rather than keep reaching for the diagnostics tool !!!

Have you checked all 4 donut hoses and the throttle chamber intake one?
Someone on here found their leak on the under side of a donut hose. Small mirror?
Did you have just one manifold replaced? Best advice is to have both done at same time to reduce overall cost if the second one "went". It might be the unchanged one if you only had one done.
Check all hoses first....
A high pressure smoke test is the best way to check for leaks. Not a low pressure one.
Others will be along shortly to either confirm or refute

Ive had a look around the four donuts on the plenum, I can't see of feel an air leak and there are no soot marks in that area.

And yes! I did just get the left hand inlet manifold replaced. I asked at the time if I should get them both done as a belt an braces kind of thing but the the Garage didn't think it necessary, Maybe I should have stuck to my guns and insisted....

Ive just tried to book it in at my normal place to be told they have no availability till mid july !!

So Ive found another place near Dunmow (its about 40 mins away from me) that will have a look and do a smoke test whilst I wait on Tuesday first thing. If they can fix it there and then great, if it turns into something horrendous we will work out what to do....

Thing is I've just taken it out to do some shopping and it didn't fault once ! I even tried accelerating hard in manual mode giving it large revs and it was fine.

It was only a short trip so maybe the fault is something heat related ??? 2011 4.4 TDV8

Good it didn't trigger again today Andy...

The usual suspects:

- Cracked inlet manifold
- 4 x donut hoses
- hose connection to the throttle body
- sometime the throttle body itself
- CSOV valve can stick (easy fix if stuck you can free it up)
- MAP or MAF sensor dirty

Andy - has your motor had the CSOV fix? There is a TSB on here that explains it all. You can see down from right hand side of radiator with a torch if you know what you’re looking for.

When the CSOV is stuck it throws up restricted performance as soon as you hit 2500 rpm. It also has a very obvious fault code description.

Hi Mike.
Im not getting any fault code on my GAP II
Other than the one already mentioned that never clears !
I thought it might be Rev related / second turbo / 2500rpm thing at first.
However on my last drive I accelerated hard up to 4K in all the gears ( manual mode ) and it just took off like a stabbed rat !! No faults at all !!
As I mentioned earlier I’m feeling it might be something getting a bit hot ? Like a heat soak thing.
I’ve had a rather stiff gin now so will try and see what recreates the fault tomorrow
Will have a look at the valve at the front tomorrow as well.

I took me a while to find the valve but with an LED torch focussed into a spot I found it after about 5 mins looking.
Over towards the right, look down and below the rad.

OK a bit of an update..

I haven't had a chance to look for the valve yet but will weather permitting tomorrow.

I had to make an emergency dash to the vets today with one of my dogs, when I started the car the display said "service required" which puzzled me as I've only done 9000 miles since its last service, So whilst I was waiting for the vets to examine Sid ( you have to wait outside whilst they look at your dog) I checked the oil level and its telling me that its overfilled !
Now I now i haven't put any oil in it, so it must be diesel..

Does that throw any light on my problems guys ??

yup. Fuel in oil contamination. you need to check the level of fuel in oil. Ideally do an oil change asap.

The upper limit before action required is 7 (mind was 12!!). it occurs because the car pumps extra diesel into the exhaust (DPF filter) to raise the temps to enable a forced regeneration. Some of this is unburnt and find its way into the crankshaft (or similar) hence the oil contamination.This also triggers an early "service Required" alert.

If you are getting this it could mean your car is trying to do lots of regenerations and not succeeding which would seem to point to another air leak. your symptoms are identical to mine (except I didn't have the fault code) and I replaced the left pax side inlet manifold too (but it cured it and now runs fine)!
