Home electrics - can use 3 x single 2.5mm vs. Twin & Ear

Hi team,

A non- Range Rover question to any spark-types...

I need to add a 1 x double 13a socket as a spur to a ring.

There is a small gap to get a cable into the floor void needed for the run but a 2.5 T&E is just a shave too thick*

1.5mm T&E would fit but isn't rated highly enough in my view for even 1 x 13a double spur.

To save a load of destruction, does anyone know if can I use 3 x 2.5mm single core ?

The job would be infinitely easier if I can use the small access gap to feed the cable(s) into the void but this is just a feed point and once in the void there is plenty of room. Any cable won't be remaining in the access gap and therefore won't under any squeeze pressure.

I've seen multiple singles used in commercial wiring but I have not really come across them in domestic. Cheers, Greg

Sorry, in a word - no. The sheath must be continuous & enter all the accessories such as back boxes.

Put simply - single cables are used within trunking/conduit systems which effectively form the same purpose (mechanical protection) as the sheath that surrounds Twin & Earth type cables.

Having said that it would work but not comply.

Just a thought, would 2 x 1.5 T&E work ?

Or is that too much of a bodge?

Capacity would be sufficient, as would sheathing.... ?

. Cheers, Greg

Deffo make the hole bigger.

As above you could wire it in conduit, but it’s not worth it for the sake of making an existing hole a tad larger.

If possible would it not be better to extend the ring to the double socket, rather than adding it as a spur. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Bigger hole is the right advice

Depending on how much of a pain that is - does the spur really need to be to a 2x13a socket ?

Could you put a fused spur next to the existing socket and then run 1.5mm off that to the new location and a single socket ?

Cheers Mark. Thumbs Up
The 'hole' isn't that simple more of a gap.
The hardwood finished oak floor is the thing I would have to drill and it's on show so trying not to do that....

Alistair - yes I could certainly that is an option. Thumbs Up
