Greg,
The O ring in the elbow causes a coolant leak,not oil.

Hi Greg, thanks for the reply. I’m still scratching my head to be honest. I’ve cleaned everything up again and put the undertray’s back on so I’ll see how I get on. Touch wood I’ve not seen any drips yet so hoping the oil I did see after the repairs was just the residual oil running off. I’ll be keeping an eye on it so I’ll update again if I find anything. But if anyone has some new ideas I’ll be happy to check it out. Cheers, Andy

Andy I'd whip off that under tray, it can collect oil, concealing leaks.
Hope it's stopped though Thumbs Up .

Australia 2014 Range Rover HSE SDV8 Santorini Black

Hello all, 1st time poster here.

I have a RRS MY14 4.4 TDV8 HSE Dynamic, bought 2nd hand & has run well for close to 1.5 years but....over the last 3 months it's started to smell like burning tyres but it's leaking oil.

I've read all 26 pages of this thread plus similar threads on the Aussie LR/RR forums but the local dealer in SA, Solitaire refuse to listen to any of this & want to replace all parts for about $2,900 (including labour). I asked them what's failed in order for them to replace everything & they've said we need to replace everything as it "may have cracked"!!

The local Indi is also nervous to just change o rings & gaskets but what he was saying is that my car's engine is quite different to the V8's on this thread & access is very difficult, so if he's doing this, he would replace the cooler, just to be safe.

Can anyone confirm that my engine variant is the same/similar that the V8's engines of this thread or is my diesel V8 of different design?

Your engine bay is different in that the L322 has a cabin air intake above the back of the engine which once removed gives very good access to the back of the engine, unlike your vehicle where access is not so easy. Whether the oil cooler is replaced or split into its 2 parts and a new gasket is fitted is not affected by the above differences but when paying someone else to do the work you might be better off to have the cooler replaced purely based on the extra labour cost of cleaning the old cooler and with the guarantee that the cooler isn't split, although this appears to be a very rare event.

I have a 2015 Vogue SE 4.4 SD and have just experienced the same symptoms. Is the fix the same as the older model there seems a lot more stuff to remove than described in the first very helpful post in this topic. Local non land rover outfit, Nene Overalnd is quoting £800 plus VAT for the repair!

Hi there,
I’m quite new here and after reading the whole 26 pages I decided to replace the gaskets on my own, however I got stuck with removing the “donut” plenum. I have unscrewed everything and now it’s look like there is something keeping it still just under the throttle body. I believe is the metallic plate on which are located the engine cover supports.
Can anyone give me a bit of advice please.

I spent 2 days reading on the forum but I couldn’t find this post anywhere.It looks like I have to spend more time and make myself familiar with the website.
I will give it a go tomorrow and see if the gaskets needs replacing or is just the o rings which I noticed today that they will need replaced. Also while I was working on it I managed to snap off the little water pipe so I will either improvise something or worst case scenario might have to order the whole hose assembly.

The Wiki is top right in the header of the website. I remembered it being posted originally so had a bit of an advantage.

You might as well do the gasket if you are stripping it down. Won’t have to worry about it then. You aren’t the first, and won’t be the last to break that stupid water pipe connection. Mine broke whilst I was driving. Was about £90 if I remember right as it’s all the pipes in a complete assembly from Land Rover.

I am not sure if the baskets were not previously changed two years ago when I purchased the vehicle as I remember taking it back due to coolant leaking. The mechanic changed initially the thermostat but that did not solved the problem, after he mentioned that he changed the gasket on the oil cooler. Most probably only one of the gaskets. I might order both and get them replaced for my peace of mind.
I was reading here somewhere that there is a guy working for Land Rover parts and he can offer some sort of discount on parts. Would you recommend him? Or should I get them of eBay as I see there are around a tenner each?
