Thanks Thumbs Up

All pulleys and belts have been changed.

The climate control is switched to off. Mainly so as to hear the sound clearer. It’s worth checking again with climate on and off though.

I agree that it’s a case of “parts darts”. However, two “master technicians” from JLR have inspected the vehicle.

It’s costing them a lot of money. Not least because they gave me a D5 SDV6 HSE Luxury in Feb. with 500 miles on the clock. It’s now got over 13k miles on it.

Crikey, that's quite pronounced. At least they're looking after you with the loaner, which is good to hear Smile

My first thoughts would be a viscous fan which has been mentioned earlier in this thread (if that's what's fitted to your car). Failing that an obstruction in the air box or inlet pipework? Surely the LR techs would have checked for that already?

Hope you get this resolved.

Thanks. Thumbs Up

I think I’m right in saying that’s there’s no viscous coupling on the SDV8. Happy to be corrected though.

It’s a slight comfort that it’s not unique to my vehicle.

A study of eBay shows electric fan pack, so that eliminates viscous fan theory!
So definitely not that!

My gut feeling is that it’s something very minor, but not on the list of items replaced, doesn’t show up with pressure and smoke testing and obviously doesn’t trigger a fault.

The oil pump is being changed tomorrow. Fingers crossed but I’m sceptical of that being the cause.

Not sure how I missed this thread but mine is doing something very similiar having just come back from its third dealer visit this year (so far been off the road for 12 weeks) to fix a coolant leak and a number of other issues.

On its last visit they replaced the Oil cooler heat exchanger, the EGR cooler, the EGR and one of the turbos as they spotted its been leaking and when I picked it up it sounded a lot noisier then before especially in idle or low revs. I'll go back out in it shortly and see if I can detect the specific whoosing noise that yours has LT

Between 1000 and 1500 revs there is a noise resonance and minor vibration through the cabin and steering wheel and the high pressure fuel pump is very rattly (with a mechanics stethoscope on it at idle it sounds like its about to implode) - and you can hear a significant metal rattle as you come off the throttle as you approach a junction which I am fairly sure is the fuel pump again. However I'm not completely convinced that the issue is solely the fuel pump and your experiences suggest the same - it sounds to me like something in the air intake or turbo system isn't completely tight or even just something as small as a loose heat shield. Given that apparently the EGR and the oil coolers are quiet a significant engine strip down job I suspect something just hasn't been put back right but my problems are definately a combination of the fuel pump and something else.

I did find two air intake hoses which were loose when it came back and nipped those up - seemed to make a small change at the time but not so sure now. Its back in at the end of the month so will keep you informed too. Current Fleet:-

Took a video of mine today but haven’t figured how to use you tube yet.....

Basically exactly the same noise which occurs between 1050 and then is definitely less noticeable by 1150 rpm. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yes, identical noise but kicks in at slightly lower rpm.

UPDATE:
Oil Pump has been changed and unsurprisingly it’s made no difference.

So that’s basically all the ancillary parts replaced.

Sounds Possibly turbo related to me.

I’m assuming they have looked at yours and ruled this out..?

I still havent managed to ace a snoop round to see if I can narrow it down though. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

High pressure fuel pump

ACE Pump

Water pump

Alternator

Both turbos

All pulleys and belts

Oil pump

A smoke and pressure test has been carried out, twice!

Whilst both front and rear turbos have been replaced, that’s not to say that it’s not turbo related but it’s not any part of the turbo set up that is monitored by a sensor.

They have special air intake arrangement.
Could it be within that?
Would they be prepared to disconnect the integrated air intake and connect a temporary solution to the air filter box and try?
Must commend them on their persistence, not a quality usually found in JLR dealers.
