Ticking or Knocking on Supercharger 5.0

Hi all,

Just picked this 2013 Supercharged Autobiography on 48k miles. Have noticed a slightly worrying noise coming from the engine when it's fully warm. It speeds up a bit with engine revs and then seems to disappear. Any thought on what it might be?

I'm worried it is timing chain guides and if it is that I need to return it to the dealer asap.

I'm no expert on the 5.0L but it may be "chainslap" and need the tensioner looking at? Otherwise the chain guides is normally first point of call. (I take it these engines don't have VANOS a la BMW 4.4 V8??)

Although it’s difficult to be certain from the audio, it sounds like it could well be chain rattle due to failing tensioners. It’s certainly not right - it may ‘just’ be the supercharger coupling, but that’s still best part of £1k to sort... Is the car under warranty? If so, I’d be tempted to get the car sorted under warranty, rather than rejecting it - if it is the chain, fitting the latest parts should make the engine good for the next 150+k.

As an update for anyone that sees this. It was eventually diagnosed as timing chain tensioners. It still wasn't fixed after 6 weeks of giving it back to the dealer so rejected it and got my money back. The car had a 20k mile gap in its service history (grey area on LR's suggested service intervals) which I guess had something to do with it. Interestingly, there was another blue supercharged one up for £54k with 40k miles too and it has the exact same gap in service history. Decided to leave it and the hunt continues.

Tom, sounds like you made the right decision - although it's a quite a big job to change the chain tensioners, we're talking about a week's work, so they should have been able to fix it comfortably in that time.

Afternoon Gents,

Wondering if I could piggyback onto this thread.

I've just picked up a 5.0 Supercharged and contemplating the timing chain tensioner issue. I've taken a video of mine idling after a cold start and it doesn't seem too dissimilar to a normal idle sound bearing in mind that the engine cover is off. I also prodded on of the chains through the oil filler cap and there doesn't seem to be much play at all.

It's possibly something that i'll need to budget for in the future, but I don't think there's anything particularly worrying right now.

Anyway, I just wanted to see what you thought.

That video sounds like a diesel which is just what mine sounds like and it's had the chains done...

I think it's because they are direct injection...

Defo not like the slapping sound in the video of the OP... Thumbs Up

Remember you can only hear the chain noise with the bonnet up and standing in front of the car, listen from the drivers seat and it's near impossible to hear... Pete

First one, wow that is the clearest I've heard the issue. I'm surprised they don't just fix it, yes there is a lot of room to be cleared but it isn't that big of a job and then the car is sellable. Very odd.

Second video I agree with Haylands, that sounds pretty 'normal'. Noisiest V8 I've ever owned, even with the bonnet shut. Best fix for it is a louder exhaust Razz

PS. A worn coupler you can also feel and hear when driving. There is just a slight delay in the supercharger, the wine is also less pronounced.

Thanks for the rapid responses guys.

The car is a 2010 (10.5 i think) on 108k miles. It was serviced by main dealer up to around 80k, so i'm wondering if it's already been done. I tried to contact the service centre of the garage that looked after it (Hendy Land Rover in Christchurch), but they're not returning my calls.

Any suggestions for a fruitier exhaust? Wink

Nowhere near all of them have this problem, although many internet sites may suggest otherwise. Often the 'issue' is perpetuated by those who don't even have one or experience this. In my opinion anything can fail on an engine. Just keep up with normal maintenance, and treat it nicely and it will be fine.

For an exhaust; I tend to use Full Throttle Performance, they are bespoke exhausts so you can have it how you want it. They get it spot on, no drone on the inside. Mine even was one in black as I didn't want shiny bits on my car...But being near Dunstable on the A5 is a little bit away from you near Christchurch (lovely part of the country)...I'm sure there are some decent performance specialist around there.

I’ve seen a lot of posts stating that all of the cars will eventually have this issue, but do find that a bit hard to believe.

I’ll keep it in mind, but the car now lives in sunny glasgow - a long way from Christchurch 😂

I’ve just realised that this is the l405 group. I should have stated I’ve a L322 (but I presume everyone got that from the 2010 model year)
