Hi all,

has anyone used a Sealy Oil pump to do an oil change?
I like the vacs some folk use but this would extract directly to my oil waste container.

Yes,
I use one (on our 3.6 TDV8) to get the majority of the oil out before removing drain plugs & getting the last dregs out.
Far less messy than just using the drain plugs & quicker as I no longer waste time cleaning-up all the oil that bounces off cross-members etc
It may be obvious. but get the engine warm first, so the oil flows easily.

That Sealey pump is identical (other than the stickers) to the one I use which I bought from Lidl

Well that's my mind made up Lidl don't have them at the moment so will spend the whopping £20 on the Sealy one.

Just an update on my experience with the electric pump used to remove the oil.
it is slow took about 20mins to get all the oil out so the vacuum syphon seems to be a much faster experience. it did pull out all the oil a little over 9ltrs and while it was doing its stuff i changed the air filters, oil filter and the cabin filter.

Wow, that's slower than I'd expect.

Your comment made me just check what I have & its the MachineMart own brand, Clarke pump - not Sealey - although they look very similar.

I'm sure it only takes me around 10 minutes to pull out everything that can be reached with the pump.

yes oil was fully hot when extracted.

DrRob i think i might agree sir on this one the only advantage is i drain straight into the disposal vessel. Still i had time to do all the filters whilst waiting and it did extract all the oil it could. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

just an update since the service on my Fatty. The engine seems so much quieter (I already though it was quiet) and pick up seems more responsive too. not noticed MPG increase but over all much quieter, i can only think the last lot of oil was sub par or the wrong grade even cold start in the morning it does not seem to give that diesel clatter.
it might be a combination of oil service and new air filter (Already pointed out how bad the primary air filter was)

Blank your egr’s and the oil will stay cleaner and last better! I haven’t blanked egr’s before but am amazed by how clean the oil stays, it’s almost petrol like for how the oil stays clear. Coming from an ex-master tech who has serviced many 1000’s of cars over the years.

ur20v: I don't believe you can blank the EGR's on a 4.4 TDV8, something to do with the ECU........but stand to be corrected. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

yes i hate the fact i cannot keep engine oil clean in a diesel. I used to have the original Focus RS that was a 400HP monster i did 80k in it fully tuned i used to do an oil change every 3k and it came out like it went in!!
but i have read over and over that EGR delete on this particular engine is not generally recommended like the 3.6. the only people who recommend it are the tuning houses and they have a financial interest in you doing it and having a subsequent re-map.
for the oil i will compensate with 6k oil change as it is quick and easy to do.
but to consider EGR blanking i would need to see evidence it will not ruin a great engine. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

4.4 needs the EGR to work for DPF etc.

Reading this thread had me thinking about the ideal or accepted oil level setting as far as the electronic instruments screen readout goes...
Most of my previous oil/filter services have had the electronic level arriving at around the upper mark - almost at overfilled... Many services I've watched on Youtube (Sam etc) have filled engine to the middle or OK oil level... and maybe seen how things run before topping or not topping...
Question is: What would members here at FF consider as best oil level to be happy with?



My baby is the trusty L322 2012 Westy with 63,000 miles

We just did the two diffs and transfer box also recently...

I have mine at one or two notches above mid point when COLD.
20mins post shut down of a HOT engine it shows at top of scale.
I use around 8.3L to achieve this following vacuum extraction.
Anymore oil than this and it will defo show Overfilled when checked HOT.
