I think that the shape of the L322 is the closest of any that take the design back to the Classic Range Rover look.

The L322 is my favourite and I only changed to an L405 because of the mileage I used to do. The L405 is a better machine but for me the interior is too similar to other high end cars re buttons and layout. I loved the buttons in the 3.6 , chunky and more 4 x4 for my tastes. The L322 4.4tdv8 with 8 speed box and digital dash offers the best of all worlds in L322.

If I had known the pandemic was coming I would have kept my 2011 L322 and bought the prova countach kit car I am looking to build. Hindsight !!!! 2015 4.4 AB

Couldn't agree more with verydisco... The L405 is a better car but the 4.4TDV8/5.0 L322 is a better Range Rover Thumbs Up

If they did a “new” version of the 322 I would have one. Ie if the newest one wasnt now 8 years old. If I could get a 3 year old 322 then I would have one in a shot, and in preference to the 405.

Even though the 405 is in some ways progress, the 322 is the more characterful car. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I sold my 2011 se and regretted it from the moment I saw it go down the road.
Then the pandemic hit and my plans went out the window?
Had the itch for 9 months and after trying 4 horrors in L405 AB spec I have now settled on the last March 2012 L322 AB with Design kit and reasonable milage sub 100k miles.with full service history
One of the first things I looked at was the wires on top of the suspension struts and to my surprise is the the car was built with upgraded wires from new? which makes me wonder did they listen to the people that complained about small annoying cheap wiring problems, Then have them fixed on my car before building the L405.
The other thing I was worried about was spending £30k + on a car and keep looking at the money it cost be washed down the drain with all this rain we are getting and not be able to go anywhere for another year. Big Cry

Coming from a long line of RR's, both L322's and L405's all I can do is echo some of the comments above. The L405 is a far superior car in pretty much every measurable way, but it always feels like less of an event than the L322. True that event was usually a breakdown, but it was a nice place to wait for the recovery services! - Corris Grey 2017 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8

How would a newer body with a less powerful engine (TDV8 vs SDV8) be a wolf in sheep’s clothing?

Or have you got some crazy power upgrades on yours?

Very interesting comparison.
I’ve only ever owned a 405 and haven’t driven a 322.
I prefer the look of the 322, inside and out, but I’m also very happy with the lighter weight and better performance and fuel economy.
Having owned two D4’s previously, I would never have considered a ‘5 in a month of Sundays (for obvious reasons), but the 405 has proven a great replacement; when the 405 proves too small inside, I just hitch up a trailer 👍

Just a couple of things to add to the above..

I think it’s important to point out that Hunter wellingtons are for North London champagne socialists attending Glastonbury Laughing
You say the Queen and Jeremy Clarkson can have any car in the world yet still chose the L332 over the L405, well anyone with an L405 can have an L322.

Also, Clarkson does have an L405 BTW.

its funny, I’ve always liked the original versions of each of the marks. For example, the 2002-2005 L322, and the original look of the L405 before they changed to the angular headlights. The later styles of each being too fussy.

Its like they get the design ‘right’ first time with proportions as they’ve started with a blank canvas … then someone in the style team has to add / change, taking it away from the blank canvas balanced proportions.

As for L322 v L405, all round the L405 is way better inside, out and for the most part when driving Imho. The only place the 322 wins out is the weightier feel of the drive when its plodding along, and I think its down to the steering assistance… the older variable assistance hydraulics feeling more connected than the electric assistance newer version. V8 or else ...

I looked at L405's but I kept seeing L322's and preferring the shape. So much so I just bought a 2012 Westminster with under 54k miles and I love it. The equivalent L405 would have been more than double the money which I couldn't justify as a second car as I wanted to keep my other car. The only criticism I could make of the L322 is the dated infotainment system but I knew that when I bought the car. I don't see the need for an electrically operated tailgate or electrically folded seats and I don't get touch screens which are becoming more and more prevalent in every new car. There is something about buttons you can push and dials you can turn. I think those screens will cause today's models to date faster and be less desirable as used buys in the future as they will give trouble. A good L322 is a superb value proposition if you get a clean one.
