Range Rover thefts and insurance

Talking with my broker yesterday about the possibility of adding a new RR to my insurance, he told me that underwriters are struggling with Range Rover thefts and as a result I would need to fit an S7 tracker and my premium may be more than I was expecting. A few questions for the folks on here:

- Have you had to install a tracker as part of your insurance?
- I assume the LR InControl tracker does not meet the required S7 spec (cant find out much online about it)
- Has LR updated their remote fobs so they now sleep and don't transmit all the time?

Its a strange one, I was with LV, they declined to renew my insurance but another member on the forum is still with them.

I went on Confused.com put my details in and AXA were the cheapest and didn't need any additional Tracker fitted over and above the factory one.

Vaguely remember somebody saying that if you replace the factory Tracker with a third party one and your car is under manufacturers warranty, it invalidates it. Now I've had a lot wine over the weekend so that maybe complete rubbish but ask the question of Land Rover customer services.

You can disable keyless and put your key in a faraday bag but my local dealer told me they lock their keys in a special safe overnight and they've still had 3 cars stolen so I don't how they're defeating the security.

When I got my L322 several company's insisted on a tracker, I found Admiral didn't require the tracker and they were cheaper than the others as well. NFU was another company that didn't insist on a tracker. BMW i3 Electric Car

My insurers (first Privilege an then NFU Mutual) have always accepted the LR tracker. It is category 6. There is a method of stopping keyless entry, I recall a thread on here, with a video, but I've not done that. I wrap mine in kitchen aluminium foil when not in use, that works as a Faraday cage, some metal tins (and maybe safes) do not, it is a case of approaching the car with the chosen method in place and seeing whether it can be opened. But there will be an arms race between the manufacturers/insurers and the thieves as regards technology, so maybe the right kit can communicate with the car even when no key is detected.

Part of the risk analysis for insurers will also be where you live, probably safer in, say, Orkney than London. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I just got a quote online, when I had my new TDV6 back in 2016 the price was £600 now the cheapest are £1000 (D300 Vogue). For clarity I live in a low risk postcode, have 10yrs NCB, I am over 40 and have a clean licence (and dont use my car for work). I am surprised by the prices. 2021 L405 Vogue D300

Best quote I have just had was from Confused (via Axa) £485 including my wife who had an accident in 2017 and has an SP30 from last year. Had a quote from Admiral and it was over £1000 even with a tracker fitted.

So to close this thread out, it looks like the current InControl Secure tracker is CAT6 which has been reclassified as S7 under the new standards, if it had driver cards it would be S5. It looks like it meets the needs of my insurer which is the main thing. 2021 L405 Vogue D300

But, it has the Guardian mode on the app, so if thats active and the car is stolen, then surely the Tracking people know its not you in the car.
Surely Guardian mode is the virtual Driver Card in this case?

Thatcham Category S5 is for devices that provide post-theft vehicle tracking and Automatic Driver Recognition (ADR). ADR is a feature on premium tracking products that identifies approved drivers. These identifiers are usually small tags the driver keeps on their keys or on their person. Vehicle movement without a tag will automatically send an alert to the owner directly.

So technically it is S5 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

I’m a couple of week away from needing to renew, but refreshed last years search and I was more than pleasantly surprised to get a couple of quotes around £600. It cost £840 last year and the year before that my 7 series was just under £1000 and when I had 3 points on my license it was over £1100 a year.

No tracker required last year, haven’t got far enough to see if that’s changed. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

I don't know how old your cars are mine is a 2011 vogue and i found out today that when i insured with tescos two years ago I had no theft cover!
why you ask? well because i did my insurance online and not through there contact centre! Online they do not ask if the car is fitted with a tracker anywhere but I was renewing my car and wanted to add a second car so called them and apparently my car is meant to have a tracker fitted? i explained it never asked the question on line and the guy said he thinks its in the terms and conditions. i then tried Churchill, Esure, Privilege and Direct line all of whom i only had to pay to get my insurance but at that stage i phoned each one to check if my car needed a tracker and the answer was YES! again nowhere did it ask.

That's. Worrying.

I don't recall any mention of needing a tracker for mine when I insured it. I'm sure it's the l405 that's more prone and susceptible though is it not? 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

mine is L322 2011 and I have just raised it with consumer rights but i have only checked Churchill, Privilege, Direct Line and Esure i will be checking others today. if you purchase online you will not be asked the question anywhere that i've found so far.
you have to phone and ask if you need a tracker that they then tell you yes and if you bought online and dont have a tracker you will have no theft insurance. just to add churchill said it applies to all Range Rovers and a lot of other expensive cars.
