And now front brakes are on the list!!!

I have brake squeal. It’s fine when the windows are up, but when you see pedestrians and other drivers turn, look and wince as you come to a stop you realise that despite the serenity in the cabin you need to do something about it.

So I decided to take the front wheels off and take a look (well, wheel… I didn’t make it to the other side!)

My plan was to take the pads out to check for copper slip, sticky stuff and other issues, as well as check over the pistons to see how they look… but can’t get the bloody pins out!

You can see where they’ve had a good hammering by someone at some point, and the end of the pin is also misshaped so I thought I’d leave it in place and order replacements before attempting those again!

You’ll also appreciate the paintwork too… clearly they were yellow at some point and have been painted over which is coming off and looks awful! I find it looks like rust and mould from a distance Rolling Eyes

I am now going to look at stripping and rebuilding them myself, or maybe use someone else to do it all for me.

According to their website these guys charge £78 per calliper and that include painting! Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

I must have spent 15/20 minutes per pin yesterday on our L405, two dissimilar metals is never fun.

Ours were not in such bad shape, but even then I ended up cutting one in half that was just bending out.

I cleaned them up and then soaked them in a quick release fluid for a hour or so before, then with a good quality punch started to work them forwards and backwards until they were nice and free.

I also cleaned out all the holes of corrosion and coated in copper slip prior to assembling with new pins etc.

Probably the worst brake job I’ve ever done!

I’ve got this job to look forward to soon. Might start soaking the pins in plus gas...
I’ve got all new fitting kit alongside the pads and discs. Also bought new caliper bolts and the correct socket for them

These 6 pots are becoming a right pain. The issue is the locking collar on the inside edge, stuck in place then the pin bends while trying to remove

I've had to drill and extract the pins in the past, they have been that tight...

Ceramic grease is essential when rebuilding, to prevent the pins seizing again in the future Thumbs Up

Good shout on the copper slip, not sure why I always reach for it as it never touches the lotus.

On the subject of the lotus, that’s aluminium and steel all over the place, Lotus use duralac joint compound from the factory and you have absolutely no issues between the two metals. Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
