I had the same issue... thee starter internal contacts are the guilty ones. I changed the starter and everything is fine. Known issue for the 2010-12 4.4 diesel

I have a new Starter by the way, but continue to have intermittent starting issues:

There is a known BCM issue LTB00492NAS2 | https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2014/SB-10071055-6903.pdf

I have done up update through GAP, lets see if it helps else BCM swap. SOLD | Tuned MY 2011.5 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 Orkney Grey | e-diff | ACC

A known issue is the trigger wire from the starter relay to the starter solenoid not being able to carry enough current to cause the solenoid to be operated with sufficient force to hold less than perfect contacts closed. The wire is over 6m long, half of which is 4mm2 and the other half 2.5mm2. People have found that installing a replacement wire between the relay and solenoid overcomes the starter malfunction. A new starter will also overcome the problem while the contacts are in good condition.

Makes sense, is it a new part code or another piggyback wire? SOLD | Tuned MY 2011.5 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 Orkney Grey | e-diff | ACC

Not a LR fix, just a length of appropriate gauge wire fitted with the required terminals.

Have cleaned the busbar and the mega fuses, they all seem to have some oxidation. Also found some oxidation CJB earthing point.

I have a similar issue.

Turn on the ignition and everything seems fine. Entertainment system comes on, all good. Then the tick-tick-tick when the engine should be turning over and the hard brake pedal.

Added to that though is a reset of the entertainment system with the date back to 2009 and the analogue clock buzzing round like I've just hit 88mph. Then there is further clicks and whirs from behind the screen.

Is this electrics issue consistent with others' experience or does that sound something new?

Mine seems to be behaving since i did the cleanup work, bad supply/earth to JBC/BCM can explain all of the issues i was having. Car is cranking @ low voltage even. Residue build up seems inevitable due to age and use.

Light emery paper application and crc contact cleaner did the job for me.

Afaik there is no connection between the starting circuit and the brake pedal apart from the micro switch. So like mine the pedal is going hard, but possibly too hard to press significantly in yours. There is an interlock which won’t allow the car to start unless the pedal is depressed, the only way the car knows if you’ve got your foot on the pedal is the pedal switch, so if you can’t press the pedal enough, the car doesn’t know you are pushing it, and it won’t start. As you say yours is too hard to press when the starting issue occurs I would check that first.

The thing making the pedal hard is the bleed off of vacuum in the brake Servo afaik.

Afaik, did you manage to rectify the problem……..I am having the same issue currently……
I see you are in Derby, great town…….I used to live in Burton

GAP is the company that make the IID diagnostic tool.

BCM is the Body control module which should be under your pax seat and controls a number of functions in the car. they are known to go faulty at times.
