Officially, the 2012 is my Dad’s car that he bought new in 2012. It’s a pampered one. It gets detailed annually, lives inside, has never seen salt or rain and has only just ticked over 23k miles.

It’s on it’s original tyres still but they’re getting changed in a week or two as I noticed yesterday when checking the tyres that they’re pretty cracked on the edge and when driving it I noticed they’re getting a bit noisy on the road. On it’s original discs and pads too. It’s as close to a new one as you can get I’d imagine.

He needed it this week and seeing as we’re only an hour and a half from home I took it back today and fetched my XFR. Bit of a ball ache but not worth loosing a weeks holiday due to a knackered gearbox Smile

I know where I’m parking the XFR if the weather turns…

After all the mucking around this week, I must admit I’m being really tempted by a 2017 RRS SVR that I’ve seen for sale at the moment. 🤔

That’s sounds a great car your dad has - the only thing I don’t understand is when people are doing that little mileage why wouldn’t they just get a petrol? Generally less issues and no turbos and injector or egr issues and whilst more to run it’s negligible at that mileage. It will be worth a few quid if and when he sells it mind as it will have a lot of life left in it! Current stable:

When he bought it the plan wasn’t to do so few miles they just bought other cars afterwards that have been used instead. Although his last L322 had only done 25k in 5 years when he sold it.

He likes the low down torque from the diesel and also the range. He’s used my SC a few times and gets fed up with the fuel stops. When his L322 comes out of the garage it’s usually for long trips to see family down south or similar, it doesn’t do short trips anywhere and doesn’t come out unless it’s going to get warm so EGR and all the other diesel issues shouldn’t really be an issue on that one I guess.

If it is replaced, chances are it’ll be staying anyway now.

Well, that's us back from holiday...

The gearbox is in the workshop, the 20 litre drum of Lifeguard 6 is in the workshop, and there's a box of bits been delivered from Rob at Duckworths... Tomorrow I'll figure out how I'm going to get the car from the lawn into the workshop and hopefully we can get the box replaced.

Anybody done it before or got any pointers?

I had a good look at the new gearbox today. I’m a bit peeved but a bit pleased at the same time.

There are brackets on the side of the gearbox that you remove before removing the box. They hold things like the wiring loom, selector cable, etc. All 6 of these bolts on the side of the new gearbox are sheered and have the bolts snapped in the holes.

I then noticed a sticker on the box…

It says “Attention - Clean oil cooler and connecting lines before installing gearbox”. This made me think that the Discovery that the gearbox came from has had a replacement gearbox at some point.

I then found another sticker on the side that showed the build date of the gearbox:

It looks like this gearbox was built in December 2013 so likely wasn’t fitted until 2014. The car had only done 97k miles when it was scrapped so there’s a chance that this gearbox possibly hasn’t done that many miles.

I’ll need to spend some time carefully drilling these and trying to extract the snapped studs so that’ll take some time before I start stripping my car as I want to make sure the new box is ready before I start tearing mine to pieces.

Some of the lr stuff I.e mafs is backward so it maybe a 2017 replacement especially if the sticker was in tact - is it a straight replacement even from a disco? Current stable:

Yea, the 4.4 AJV8 and 4.2 SC share the same box. The part numbers on LR are the same and Mikey and Craig confirmed in my other thread.

https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic59978.html

That’s an interesting point, I’d forgotten they date the MAF’s backwards.

The box is very clean and every sticker is intact so it could well only be a few years old!

Shame it couldn’t have been made on the 14th of a month so we could figure it out for sure!

EDIT - the date is stamped on the inside of the sump too so we’ll know for sure when I change it!

The SC is now on the ramp so we can begin replacing the gearbox.

I used the old P38 to drag it out of the field and back onto the yard.

To give the winch on the trailer a bit of a break I had it sitting on the back of the other Range Rover sitting facing down hill on the slope at the front of the house. The trailer tilts to a 12 degree angle so when it’s facing down hill it reduces the angle of the slope. Once it was on the trailer I was able to get it into the workshop and then tilt the trailer allowing it to roll off and onto the ramp. It’s much easier doing it that was as the ramp stands proud of the floor by 3-4 inches so pushing it on by hand is impossible.

She’s now in position where hopefully I’ll be able to get it replaced in the next couple of evenings.

Over the weekend in between cutting and baling the hay and avoiding the heat I swapped the transfer box onto the new gearbox, replacing the o-ring on the transfer box, coating the shaft in the special grease and then replacing the bridge seal, 4 oil seals and the mechatronics seal in the new gearbox.

It was then sitting waiting to be refitted.

After the heat died down, I started last night by flushing the oil cooler and lines on the Range Rover. Glad I did as the Censored that came out was horrible. I rigged up an oil pump with a bit of old hose pipe and used a 12v battery to power it. I flushed 2 litres through the cooler in both directions so 4 in total. Hopefully that'll suffice.

I then replaced the o-rings on the oil cooler pipes and got on with refitting the gearbox. Everything went back together nicely. All the electrics, brackets, pipework, etc are now finished.

I ordered a new rear prop shaft as the intermediate bearing on mine was noisy and reports online of people replacing them haven't been very successful. That arrived yesterday so am hoping another evening in the workshop tonight once it's cooled down will see it all finished. Really hasn't been a bad job to do.

The back boxes on the Range Rover were always painted matt black, presumably so they're hidden under the car. Mine was starting to look a bit sketchy so whilst it was off the car I tidied that up with some heat proof paint too.

Before:

After:

Should look ok when back underneath the car.

Hopefully she'll be driving out of the workshop later on this evening as I can at least then start tidying up the workshop as it currently looks like there's a bomb gone off in it.

I removed the transfer box from the SC today. A much easier job then I thought it would be, thankfully. I noticed that when moving it between ranges manually it was stuck solid in one position but free in another.

At this point I can’t do much more as the new transfer box isn’t due to arrive until tomorrow so I went into the house for a drink. Curiosity then got the better of me so I went and started to dismantle the original transfer box.

It’s some chain inside these! I can’t imagine many of them fail!

I used a can of Fanta as a universal measurement!

It was at this point I started to see signs of what had gone wrong…

That’s as far as I got today. I’ll try and see where the metal swarf has come from when I get further into the box.
