Left when looking at the engine from the front of the car or standing behind looking forwards? The right turbo when looking forwards from the rear can suffer from oil migration through the wires from the oil sensor in the sump if the blocking harness hasn't been fitted. The blocking harness is applicable to all L405 and L494 SDV8 engines and all vehicles were subject to a recall but your vehicle may have been missed.

That’s the secondary turbo then, they can be removed with the engine in situ I’m pretty sure, unless someone has rounded / damaged bolts ETC, that said either way they can be a Censored to get out due to room, or lack of it.
I know in the L322 you had to take the diff out to gain access, not had the pleasure yet on the L405 but they look very similar.
Just make sure all your hose clips are tight before taking the plunge.

Hi Pat, they have two turbo’s, a primary which is used for most driving and a secondary which only comes in when high power is required. (Above 2400 RPM under load). Very similar to a bi turbo but Called twin parallel sequential turbos for the 4.4 full fat.
The primary turbo is on the driver side and is an electronic variable vane turbo. The secondary turbo is on the passenger side and is just a no nonsense big turbo. Both can leak oil but check all the hose connections (jubilee clips) as if they’re not tight they can leak, and a little bit of oil looks a lot when spread around in the wind.
I would also get a second opinion before taking the engine out as it’s a huge job on one of these.

So how does the turbo set up differ from the 4.4 TDV8 in the L322 and the SDV8 in the L405?

Often wondered….. I know it’s not the question the threads about…. Just curious….

As DD said, but to add for simple clarity. The 3.6 had a turbo per bank and both worked equally with any amount of throttle input… The 4.4 both in TDV8 & SDV8 guise worked like train carriages ie one behind the other… First one is highly refined and does all the lower rev work (and massively reduces turbo lag) and the secondary is a wacking great turbo that’s just there for “power”…
