Haptic feedback and modern control panel design?

So, I must admit to inadvertently wandering into the L460 forum.. I'm a little at sea right now with all this free time sitting in my bedroom in isolation, having been tested positively for CV19.

Anyway.. Was recently discussing on an MB forum about how the SL has a touch screen down the centre like many other modern cars these days, with the new L460 being no exception.

That's all grand and dandy in things like a Tesla or MB SL etc, where you probably won't have to content with gloves or dirty hands when it comes to controlling the accessories on the car.

I noted that one of the key design decisions on the Ineos Grenadier (Is that a dirty word over here?) was that the controls could be operated by somebody wearing gloves.

I also quite like the solid feedback on the dials and buttons on my L322..

However, I look at the control panel on the L460 and wonder what is going on.. has the car surrendered it's off roading roots in order to not lag behind modern design characteristics etc?

Hope you feel better soon; it’s a horrid disease.

All I would say is that the vast majority of Range Rover customers nowadays are prioritising luxury IMO over off road capability, the latter of which is still as good if not better than any previous generation.

Defender has more physical buttons and I suspect this will stay on that model line (even though most owners of Defenders don’t take it off road either I’m sure!).

I think we have to come to terms with it...... Unfortunately these large screens aren't going away, and will no doubt become standard in every car over the next couple of years.

Love the new Mercedes SL though (excluding the screen) - This one below in Alpine Grey is particularly stunning (seen best at 4.00 minutes).

Still not sure I'd buy one though, as I think sadly, Mercedes has lost its prestige over the years.

Still a beautiful car though IMO:

Thank you! I must say, I feel like I am getting off easily with COVID, as I am on day 6 of symptoms and it's felt like a bad cold only.

I suppose it's true about the luxury element alright.. and I suppose how bad if you do need to remove a glove to control the unit.

Come to terms with it we must.. I suppose it's true for any change. Never easy.

I do feel like they could do something about the haptic feedback, or perhaps they already have?

If it helps some motorcycle gloves are adapted to touchsreeen use. I occasionally drive in fingerless gloves. But in general you are right that we are a world away from the Classic and the sort of controls and use they offered. My gripe on this theme is that LR seem always to specify novel tyre sizes where there are no all terrain options for several years. But relatively few buyers will need that. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I think dougs review is incorrect regarding only being haptic, this can be toggled on or off in the settings screen, he says it’s only haptic?

The 2022 DS im driving at present has the same steering wheel buttons and I have to say, they are sh*te!!! Not a fan at all!
