Overfinch 22s on L322 - recommended tyre size?

Hi guys,

Found the overfinch wheels on my recently acquired L322 tdv8 are fit for the bin, with one wheel having had four previous welds!!!!! coupled with the others leaking air constantly….

Based on this I have sourced a brand new set of overfinch 22s and trying to decide on the optimum tyre size to protect the wheels without causing rubbing and hopefully improving ride comfort a little. The 285/35/22 overfinch specify seem to be rather hard on the rims when combined with British roads…. Can anyone point me in the right direction? 2004 4.4 Autobiography - gone

Oh the joys of 35 profile tyres and cracked alloys Laughing

I was running on 35’s and got fed up with the frequent tyre shop visits where you are on first name terms and the “back already” comments!

The general consensus on this forum is to change to 275/40R22 or 285/40R22 tyres due to the better protection, ride comfort, and to better match the rolling profile of the stock wheels.
I went for 285/45R22 tyres and it has made a huge difference… but to be fair it gives me an extra inch of tyre wall! I think they fill the wheel arches really well and don’t look oversized.
I do get occasional rubbing but I am missing my undertrays which means I have some flex in my wheel arch liners. I am sure that when I replace those trays then I’ll have no issues.
Take a look here… https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic61593.html

I will also add there are fellow members who have replaced their 35 profiles with the same size but different brand, and says that makes a huge difference…

Don’t forget you’ll need to swap all 4 tyres if changing tyre size! Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

I just got back from a short journey and thought I’d get in the wheel arch to check (it’s been a while anyway).

I can confirm that I only have rubbing where the lower front of the liner is not attached to anything. There is plenty of movement there which, if fixed, would not touch the wheels even with the these large tyres. Everywhere else on the wheel arch liner, strut, and anything else is scuff free. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Stick with 285/40/22 which fill arches nicely or 275/ 40 22 on some cars 285/ 45/ 22 may affect speedo reading (unless recalibrated ) and again on some cars touch wheel arch Thumbs Up

On the L405 for example, a 22" wheel, 275/40 R22 108Y is the only recommended tyre.

I would check your owners handbook, because anything out with from the owners handbook recommendation, could mean your vehicle has been modified, and your insurance could then be invalid.
Something to check with your Insurer. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Not quite correct LR have and do fit 285/40/22 to some of their RR’s and Discovery 5’s. Conti also sell a LR branded / marked 285/40/20 silent. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Well looking on all the LR online service manuals to date for L405 a 285/40/22 is not an option.
So please enlighten me further? It would be nice to have a choice of further approved options. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Think it might be LR compromise, as you may actually go off off road you need narrower tyres whereas on road the wider tyre is better both for grip and stance, I think the wider tyre is fitted to the higher powered RR Whistle

According to JLR if you off road you should be using 20" according to JLR owners handbook for MY21 and MY22 previous years nothing in the handbooks

UHP at 22"

My point is, if you go against what your vehicle recommended tyre spec is, you may well be invalidating your Insurance and how has it affected the safety of the vehicle?
insurers will do anything to not pay-out. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue
