Check your connections at the pcv, its an inherent weakness in the design, I resorted to wrapping them in self amalgamating tape after lots of problems with air ingress

The PCV was replaced last year as I could hear air in that general area but could never pin it down.

I’ll get it inside and do some more digging one evening this week if I can, if not, definitely at the weekend.

I’m going to try and make my own smoke tester so that I can give it a proper going over too. I had it smoke tested last year but they did it whilst I waited and didn’t find any leaks. Of course the car was hot when I got it there and seeing as it runs properly when it’s hot they didn’t find anything.

It’d be nice if I could finally put an end to it once and for all.

This isn’t connected to the original problem that you found when you first had the car is it? Coil packs etc as in the electrical feed to them? Could this be a engine bay wiring loom issue?

I don’t think so but that’s a good thought…

When I got the car it just had 1 melted coil pack that I’m sure was just down to the insulation on the coil breaking down.

I’ve done best part of 6000 miles since I swapped them out. If it was an electrical issue I’d have thought it’d be present all the time like it was originally rather then just at idle.

Interesting thought though and one I hadn’t considered

I have the same occasional issue with mine 4.4 ajv8 with LPG.
Occasional I get missfire codes on some cylinders, I replaced all coils and plugs, and it did not help with missfire, but car worked a bit more smooth.
So I tried with injector cleaner and it always helped for some extended period. I drive 95% of time on LPG, so my thought is that injectors get a bit dirty after some period, because car drives only few miles on gas, and that period is maybe too short to have them cleaned properly with only gas?
Try with some good injector cleaner first, it can't hurt

And for the hissing noise in the pcv area, mine does that too, I also checked with break cleaner, and found nothing, but didn't tried with smoke machine yet. RR HSE 4.4 2006 LPG

The hissing noise is normal. They breathe heavily from the PCV on the left bank to the throttle body. Coincidentally, also a common leakage point!

Mine misfires on cold idle. I was under the impression "they all do that sir"!  05 L322 4.2SC

Mine does it on petrol and LPG until it's warm so I'm ruling out an injector or an issue relating directly to one specific fuel.

I'm 98% sure my first 4.2SC didn't make any hissing noises from around the PCV and Sandy has said that his doesn't do it so I'm wondering if there's something amiss around the PCV.

It's definitely odd as my first one was as smooth as silk all of the time.

I've put two new LR PCVs on mine now and both do the same. I even bought a very expensive LR pipe to go from the PCV to throttle body. Still makes the noise. I also fitted a rubber hose so I could restrict the flow and it made no difference to how it ran.

Mines the same, it runs smooth when it's warmed up. 05 L322 4.2SC

Sounds like we've been through the same steps!

Apologies checked mine yesterday and mines not making no air leak sounds either. Given that's two I'd say its a possibility there's a vacuum/air leak somewhere on your motor

I've leak checked mine to death. No air leaks anywhere. Can still hear the air rushing through the PCV. And interestingly, if i pinch the pipe (I'm on a rubber hose at the moment), the noise stops or slows. 05 L322 4.2SC

My old 4.2 definitely didn’t make the noise that this one makes so I’m convinced something is wrong.

Am hoping to give it a good look over at the weekend and am going to replace the cam cover gaskets too as there’s a weep on one.

Oddly I had multiple misfires and an eml light today, cleared the lot and all well since, weird as its been fine for the last 6 months
