Oh well jumped on the tailgate with my dog so we could cool down a bit before heading home, and the left hand side strap snapped (why is it always the left ?)

I guess the nut was swollen due to corrosion, but the biggest problem was everything being corroded so the straps didn't pivot.

, as it was even worse. It took a couple of days of soaking then to get some movement I first used spanners/sockets before they'd slip, then pulling the wire up and down, then cut the wire as short as possible to give the mole grips some leverage. I removed the upper tailagate bracket to be able to unbolt the corroded mess, but the arm on the old fitting was longer that the other side so I had to snap a hacksaw blade in two and saw the 'arm' off, whilst reciting 'I hate this car' often and not quietly as I did it. Finally got it done and in a mere 1 & 1/2 hours for one bolt
