Battery drain issues with 2011 TDv8 4.4 vogue SE.

I've just bought my 8th Range Rover and what a car.
Its a 2011 TDV8 4.4Vogue SE in Galway Green with light cream leather interior.

My question is that all the previous cars both P38's and L322's have all had to some degree battery drain issues and wonder if this has been improved upon with this model year? I have replaced virtually all the interior lights with LED bulbs and fittings as I have been told by various owners that this is the way forward. It should prevent the battery drain issue or at least help.
It also does improve the brightness of the interior.

With winter approaching have I got to resort regularly to the trickle charger if its not being used for 2 or 3 days or should it be ok.I do relatively short journeys but use it daily and am guessing that doesn't help.

Surely if I had bought it new and paid £70.000 plus I shouldn't have to worry about whether or not it will start. Your advice please?

I've just done all the interior bulbs as well to help preserve the battery a bit.
I've twice left my car at the airport for two weeks and on my return it fired up nice and strong each time. My battery is two years old.
Do you know how old your battery is?

You'll be fine unless there is something ACTUALLY wrong with it. You won't be able to watch TV on it for a long time without engine running; that's normal Thumbs Up
Mine sits for 2 weeks no problem....
Now and again I'll give it a health boost by charging it through the 13pin electrics with my CTEK and an adaptor from the shop on here Thumbs Up
Enjoy it!
PS It has a DPF so lots of short journeys may upset it a bit. It needs a good run to clear it out. Oh, and use the second turbo regularly by accelerating above 2500rpm when warm Thumbs Up
Loads of info on here about the common issues on the 4.4 = oil cooler leaks, intake pipe splits etc. Be pro-active and look at all the known fault areas and sort them before they become an issue 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
New Defender D300 90 on order so "Rory" will be going to a new home....!

These late models got smarter at retaining battery power. They will shut everything down after locking and if you leave the ignition on they will shut down automatically fairly quickly below a certain threshold of voltage even with a new battery. Never had a problem with mine and regularly leave it parked for a week. Having said that if the battery is the original it's probably past it's best and they are cheap enough to replace. I assume as you are on your 8th RR you have a GAP IID tool? - if not buy one Thumbs Up 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I bought a new 90aH lead acid battery for mine on the 12th Sept 2022 as I was having battery warnings every morning with the original battery

I am now in the habit of I trickle charging mine every weekend with a CTEK 5.0, and I still get the odd warning, but the car starts every time, but the LED interior lights might be the next thing for me to get done !

no reason, other than they had a 90aH one on the shelf at a good price Smile

NB but apparently AGM batts on our cars will only charge to 80%, I read this on here somewhere, something to do with keeping the AGM battery in good health over a period of time, and that it being best to only charge them to 80%

I may be wrong but AFAIK the charging circuit on the late models L322 is designed to only work with AGM batteries. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

where did you read that - AGM batteries started being fitted as standard in the L405, I thought the main reason was to accommodate the AUTO Stop/Start feature, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I cannot find any late L322 that comes with AUTO Stop/Start as standard ?

The late L322s didn’t leave the factory with AGM batteries, then LR found there were lots of battery issues being reported and they were retro fitted. Not sure if it was a recall or just at next service etc…. Something like that happened as far as I’m aware.

Very last L322s might have had AGM from factory, but not many.

AGM isn’t just for stop/start, but stop/start prob necessitates it.

so, customers complained about the battery, the main dealer swapped it out ( I assume under the 3 year warranty) and then they updated the BMS ECU software to make sure the AGM batteries only charge to 80% - is that right ?

I have an IID tool, is there a way to interrogate the ECU to find out, have been looking around and there looks like a CCF edit that can be done, you select what battery you have, is that how its done these days ?

Must have been something like that. I think the 80% thing was always like that. It was mentioned in the press pack at launch of the 2010/11 car.

You can set the battery type in the GAP tool but not sure if you can set lead-acid vs AGM. All charging from the alternator requires mechanical load from the engine so the later 'smart' system only charges what's needed so as to save fuel and not like old systems when it was 14.7v constant load. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

when did these later "Smart System" become standard on our late L322 vehicles ??
what do you mean "Smart System" - do you mean Auto Stop/Start ?

3) is this "Smart System" a software update that main dealers installed for later L322's ??
