SDV8 recovered in recently, as a non start

Drained a little fuel, and it wasn't diesel that came out. Smelled like thinners, was red in colour

Dropped the tank and cleaned out, flushed out the fuel lines, refilled with £100 of fresh diesel. Started and ran beautifully for 10 minutes, then cut out and refused to start again

Some diag, and a long story short, we found this...

That is your last line of defence against bits of the HP fuel pump getting into the cylinder bore and scoring them...

It's the top of a fuel injector, the HP fuel pump is engineered at a molecular level - i.e. the bushings are lubricated by diesel, if the pump were to run dry or run on something with a smaller molecular size (e.g. petrol), the pump vanes will rub against the bore of the pump, resulting in bits of the vanes contaminating the fuel and being pushed down to the injectors - clogging them whilst losing the ability to produce enough pressure for the engine to run.

This is why there is, and has been for some time, 'driver inducement' misfires on very low fuel level and a forced shutdown at critically low fuel levels - to prevent the HP pump running dry.

it's also why LR stipulate the whole fuel system is replaced in the event of a misfuel and the ignition has been turned on - let alone run. If it isn't, then the vehicle is placed on the 'restricted warranty register'.

Covered in metal filings, from a failed HPFP

There were no filings in the tank when it was dropped initially, but it was covered in a sticky "substance" from whatever it had been refuelled with

Tank was cleaned, flushed and lines purged up to the HPFP until clean diesel came out. Started and ran initially, but the damage to the pump had already been done

First time I've seen a fuel system suffer that badly though

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest a backyard attempt at washing red diesel gone wrong. 2012 (L322) 4.4TDV8 Vogue SE, RSE, Fuji White over Arabica.

That is nuts, someone spending tens of thousands on a modern motor and scrimping on fuel.

My old Leyland DAF 45 race truck used to happily run on all sorts, old engine oil, cooking oil, pump diesel, and it ran without a hitch. I wouldn't dream of anything other than good pump fuel for these RRs Onto my 2nd FFRR, this time an L405 5.0L SC AB in SVO Palette black.
