2013 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Aintree Green
Engine Failure 4.4 SDV8

So yesterday the engine in my 82K miles 4.4 SDV8 decided it didn't want to hold oil any more and dumped the contents on the dual carridgeway with a bang.

I had the car recovered but haven't yet examined the extent of the damage but needless to say I think there will be a hole in the block given how much oil it was spewing.

I don't think I can endure an engine replacement so I am tempted to sell the car as a non runner.

Any thoughts on what it would be worth?

2013 Vogue SE
4.4 SDV8
82K Miles
11 months MOT
Bodywork is great condition, as is the interiour (tan), wheels not kerbed etc.
Full Service History (not that it matters now!)
Recent new front calipers, discs, pads and brake lines
Recent rear caliper rebuild with new discs and pads
New aux water pump
Retractable towbar
Meridian Sound system etc
Everything aside from the engine works without fault.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear that Martyn. You must be devastated. Hope you can find the cause and share what might have happened.

Ouch..!! Deepest commiserations. That doesn't sound good, did you have to turn it off or did it stop on it's own..? Pete

Thanks all.

I managed to coast/limp off at the next exit and dump the car in a layby as I had my kids in the car.

The car was smoking badly, the oil light came on and was running super lumpy, it took a few seconds to die after hitting the start button, a bit like it was running on?

When we got the car off the recovery truck the engine still started and ran although very badly. 2013 FFRR Vogue SE

Condolences Martyn, 4.4 tdV8 engine fails are very rare, so would be good if you find the cause and are able to share it with us.
It’s a very nice looking car and Aintree Green is very popular with forum members.
Engines are available on eBay around the £5 -7 k mark depending on age and condition.
As for value, I suspect you will be £10k shy of what you would expect in perfect running order, given the amount of labour involved in the swap, unless you get a very able member on here taking it on as a DIY project.

Could that be turbos eaten themselves and caused the mess?
Running on fuelled by its own oil?
Especially as it started again and moved under its own power?

I'd guess at sub-£10k as a non-runner.

Definitely worth getting a price for a new engine IMHO - particularly if you're happy with everything else.

Sounds like one of the Turbos has gone and it’s running on on its own oil. If it still turns over, starts and runs then it’s not seized and very unlikely there is a hole in the block - it may not be that bad. We have tractors here with turbocharged 7.5 litre engines that have had similar failures and a replacement turbo at £800 sorted the issue - it was merely the bearings that had gone causing massive oil consumption and horrendous running. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

There seems to be quite a few SDV8 engine failures appearing on the L405 Facebook groups these days Sad

Hopefully it’s something that can be repaired with minimal damage to your wallet.

I’ve seen 4 or 5 recently on Range Rover Owner L405 on Facebook.

Oil pumps seizing, holes in the block and engines knocking are the ones that spring to mind.

I’ll try and grab some screenshots of the posts tomorrow.
