even ebay LED bulbs are a night and day difference from standard Current

May or may not be better than fleabay versions, they're easy to fit and the difference is noticeable.

so, trawling through old threads regarding LED upgrades to my useless L405 headlights.
Excuse my ignorance, but are we talking about replacing just the dip beam lights. 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.
1960 Series 2 88 inch diesel.
1955 Series 1 86 inch petrol.

one bulb each side be it xenon or led..a shutter hides part of the beam for dip and opens fully for main.. ... - .- -.

That's a LED cornering infill light, roughly equivalent to the halogen lamp in the sidelight aperture in L319/L322 adaptive headlight units

from what i read in the WM , the oval bit you're on about is the main beam ..

the lenses in the headlight divert the light from the xenon bulb ...
