Dunlop air bags - knocking

Hi All,

Can anyone help me, I had a pair of Dunlop air struts fitted earlier in the year and they appear to be the source of an irritating knocking sound. The airbags work and don’t leak, but are making a low speed knocking noise.

Does anyone know the root cause for the Dunlop ones? Is there a fix? Or is the only solution to source Delphi ones?

Are you sure it's not the drop links? They are rather inexpensive and easy to replace. Also, I think there should be a warranty on the struts should they turn out to be the culprit.

Same thoughts as in the above post, plus it may be that whoever fitted the new parts made a mistake when working on the car ? If both are causing the knocking sound then I rather doubt that the parts are faulty, a quick MOT style inspection whilst the car is up on a lift could reveal where the problem is.

You had the complete stut and not just the airbag replaced? If so shocks can knock and have had this on other cars. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Both have been changed, droplinks were the first port of call, no improvement. The knocking has only started since the struts were changed. We’ve tried it on the shaker table, and it sounds like the struts but both have been replaced in the past 12 months….however found this article and it feels the same position;

I did have a Dunlop front strut that was knocking. Replaced both with Arnott, which in turn, after 60K km seem to knock slightly when the weather is cold for the first couple kilometers of the day...Nothing as bad as the Dunlop though and definitely something I can live with.

That’s helpful, not sure if you can still get the Delphi ones so they’d be a good back up L322 TD6 2003

Delphi brake and suspension units, designs, intellectual rights and production lines were bought out by BWI in 2010. 'Delphi' suspenion units are still made but under BWI name.
