Strictly speaking, C* spec is largely irrelevant. You need an oil equivalent to STJLR.03.5005 to meet the required specs (2.7/3.0/3.6/4.4 with DPF) Thumbs Up

I've just done 6000 miles with Castrol Magnatec 5W40 C-3 in an SDV8.

This was prompted by the fact I knew I was going to be hammering the motorway miles and I had considered the LR-Time videos on oil for the V6.

Noticed no difference in economy or any other observable metric, but having pulled out a half litre for sampling purposes it is much closer to new 5W30 in viscosity at 6k miles.
The oil anlysis came back with a clean bill of health as well, very little diesel in it too.

Interesting experiment which if I had a V6 I would be persisting with, but as the V8 doesn't have the same issues I will be using 5W30 to the Ford spec going forwards.

I always change engine oil at 6-8k.

I downloaded the C1 and C4 specifications documents directly from the ACEA website, and went through the 3 pages of specs line-by-line. It’s remarkable how little difference there is between them, most of the parameters are identical, with only a few very minor differences, and C4 is classed as “Low SAPS” therefore will not damage your DPF. I don’t give a sh*t that it doesn’t meet JLR spec, the JLR crappy spec oil is a higher risk IMHO, chosen for fuel economy and not mechanical longevity. 5W40 C4 is a more prudent choice than 5W30 C1 if you aren’t hamstrung by a JLR Warranty.
“Tested by JLR” Yes, to work out if it would meet economy targets and just squeak them through the Warranty period, probably. Twisted Evil “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Thanks for the info S.L.

I am due an oil change now (it's on 156,000-ish miles) and I will use 5W30 as per the manual.

But isn't C3 mid-SAPS, so bad for blocking your DPF?

EDIT --> Or is mid SAPs acceptable as well?

Don’t use C2 or C3 on a DPF car! It’s fine on older L322’s etc without DPF of course.
This is an L405 thread folks, so L322 stuff isn’t relevant, and may confuse people. Shocked “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

The Castrol Edge 5W40 C-3 meets Ford WSS-M2C917-A

The manual recommends it meets Ford WSS-M2C924-B (which corresponds to 5W30 A-5)

The Castrol Edge 5W40 C-3 has a SAPS content of <0.8%

The recommended oil has a SAPS content of <1.2%

so actually lower in Ash content than the reccomended.

IANAE but if the oil is meeting the viscosity score across the operational temperature range, if the SAPS figure is within the range that is specified then there is little to be concerned about.

Not compliant doesn't always mean substandard, I also know that manufacturers do run thin oils to get past certain hurdles in regulation, so my choice to run the 5W40 C-3 was based on a lot of hot high speed running which I thought a thicker oil on an older engine would benefit from.

Now I have dug further into data sheets I am inclined to stick with the 5W40 C-3, especially as the oil sample testing backs it up.

I am not recommending anyone does what I say, just sharing my experience.

@Stick Legs:

Both C2 and C3 are classed as “Mid-SAPS” so will clog your DPF faster than C1 or C4 which are both “Low SAPS”, so why would you , when you can get 5W40 C4, and have the best of both worlds?

I would never put mid SAPS oils in my L405, no way. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Oh I agree, and having seen that will use C-4.

The only point I was making was that the Land Rover spec WSS-M2C924-B is an A-5 oil, which C-3 exceeds.

This might be me, but I thought the point of your thread was that you can't easily get it (right now), unless buying $20K's worth direct from the Emirates? <<confused>> - Where's the confused emote on this forum? Very Happy Very Happy 1992 RR Classic 3.9 efi Vogue

@D3Jon:

No, the point of my thread was that I’d found the “Holy Grail”, -a 5W40 C4 that would directly replace the watery C1, yet not f*ck up my DPF, knowing that a C1 5W40 simply doesn’t exist.
The other point of the thread was to gauge interest, before I decide how much of it to buy, assuming the price isn’t silly.

It does seem this whole subject is poorly understood in general, and also that folks are scared to try anything that hasn’t passed through JLR’s approvals process.

What will those people do when C1 becomes unobtanium in a few years? Whistle “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

If there was sufficient interest would a company such as Smith & Allan or Westway not be interested in blending an oil that is 5W40 C4 spec for us? Must be easier than importing from the UAE if so.

I think there may be a growing number of TDV6 owners wishing to move over to such a ‘new spec’ especially as the engines reach higher mileages.

They could produce it under the ‘LR Time Dumb Ass’ label/brand. And I think Christian and Vera should receive royalties from each sale.
