5.0 supercharged oil service - oil low

Hi guys,

Bought a 2010 5.0 S/C few months ago. I wanted to do an oil change today and here's what happened. I checked the oil level on the display and it said "Engine oil too low".

I then took the old oil out of the car and only 4 liters came out, where there's supposed to come out +/- 8 liters Shocked .

Is there no hard fault on the dash when the oil level goes under a certain point? I can hardly believe the engine is only holding 50% of the amount of oil as it should. No weird noises. Engine runs smooth. I'm scared of overfilling it so I don't really know what to do now. Can the oil level sensor be tested? Damn Land Rover for not putting a physical dip stick on these engines!!

What would you guys do? '17 Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged AB (Sold)

The engines are designed to supply oil at some silly angles when off roading, they always carry much more oil than they need in normal driving, it should be fine, just replace with the correct amount but don't overfill it.

There might be a low oil warning but a lot are not turned on at the PDI, you can check with an IID or similar... Thumbs Up Pete

If the oil was too low it would cause a low oil pressure warning on braking, accelerating or cornering. Unlikley this would be turned off in the PID even if for some inexplicable reason the oil level warning was. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Ended up filling it with 7.5 liters of 5w20 to get it to the correct level. I called my local Land Rover mechanic and he confirmed that there's no hard fault on the dash with these cars for low oil level.

"You'll end up getting a low oil pressure warning and then you're probably too late" Shocked .

Anyway, lesson learned. I think I got really lucky here that I didn't break the engine. According to the service book the last oil service was 15k km ago, but I don't know if the mechanic filled it up with the right amount or just put back in what he got out of it... Will be monitoring oil level now. '17 Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged AB (Sold)

On the 5.0 engine there is no oil pressure switch so you won't get a low oil pressure warning Sad

I found this hard to believe but having been all over mine whilst repairing it, and having read online, it does in fact seem to be true. Shocked

How is the car running? I just did this and got about 3.5l throught the vacuum tube Evil or Very Mad
Hoping there is some that sits in the oil cooler and the sump the vacuum doesn’t reach
So shocking there is no low warning Current stable:

Not only is there no low oil level warning, there's no low oil pressure warning either.

I'd drop the sump plug out personally to make sure it was empty and then fill it with the correct amount personally. Despite doing every 2nd oil change using it, I don't particularly like the vacuum method.

But that’s ludicrous- the sensor is very accurate when cold I can read with my dish tools no problem so surely they could just make it to when to reads leads than say 6l before starting it flashed up top up oil?

Crazyness.

I’m not going to do the sump this time but for access reasons but not too bothered provided all is ok as I will be dumping it in a couple of weeks and refilling again. Feels the right thing to do. Current stable:

Car is running fine but I'm checking oil level every 5 - 800 km now. Just to be sure. '17 Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged AB (Sold)

I do around 8000 miles a year in mine with an oil change every 6 months and it’s never used a drop of oil in between services. Thumbs Up 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather
