Replaced the pump Friday on project L322.

I was able to remove the front bracket bolts from the old pump without pressing off the pulley wheel.

To do this I took a very stubby T40 torx bit and slid it in behind the pulley wheel, once aligned into the head of the bolt there was just enough of the hex of the T40 bit accessible to get a spanner on (10 or maybe 13mm open ended spanner) Which was then used to crack off the bolt.

Once loosened I removed the spanner and torx bit then wound out the bolt with my fingers.

There's just enough room to get the bolt out from behind the pulley wheel.

Fitting the bracket to the new pump was easy as the eurospare pump I'd bought has 3 bolts holding its pulley wheel so these were removed along with the pulley wheel to allow fitment of the bracket.

Built everything back up but unfortunately cannot test due to needing to replace a coolant hose which was damaged during the process.

These cars were definitely designed to create challenges that LR "Engineers" never worried about having to solve at low cost.

I think LR still use customers to find the problems for them to then ignore.

The TDv8 "Lion" engine design was supposed to be a joint venture with (I think) Ford & maybe Peugeot, but I don't know of any other applications than LR. Paul,

Got everything buttoned back up, power steering is improved but not quite how it should be.

It's trying though!

I noticed the new pump is whining when turning (despite lots of bleeding)

Should it not be nearly silent until I hit the stops?

The whine also increases with engine revs.

Any ideas?

Mine is normally quiet under all conditions except full lock - unless fluid level is low and presumably it's then pulling air through.
Update : The whining is a useful "prompt' to top up the fluid - ad I have a minor leak from 1 of the rack pipe connections that appears to loosen slightly after a while. Paul,

I've double checked and the fluid is at max level.

I dont think it whined before the pump change, only thing that could be suspect is the 2 dowty(?) Washers on the high pressure pipe where it bolts to the pump.

I didnt replace these did you?

Could it be that air is getting into the system here?

I'll check the rest of the system for any leaks or dampness and also check the fittings on the rack (the one you mentioned that comes loose)

I'm determined to sort the heavy steering on this L322 having failed with my others!

Getting no where with this, stripped it down again today to check if the seals on the high pressure line our of the pump were leaking.

They are not. I did find a bit of a weep where the feed hose connects to the pump (the hose from the reservoir)

I've replaced the clip on that and also the 2 on the pipes at the bottom of the reservoir.

Filled it back up, been through the bleeding procedure yet still the new pump wines when turning the steering and the steering is still too heavy.

Is there anywhere else air could be entering the system or is my new eurospare pump a dud?

So I've replaced the pump again with another one.

The whine when accelerating has gone but it still whines when turning and I haven't got full power assist.

Any ideas? I'm stumped at current.
