2020 Deployable step obstruction on deployment

Hi all,

Have a 2020 Range Rover with deployable steps, just brought it, really happy with it apart from the passenger deployable side step.

It will deploy on opening the door and then jumps back slightly near the final position, then when closing the door it does not retract and I do not hear any motor activity.

I have also tried through the screen to deploy for roof access to see if that makes any difference and when I do that I get a message that an obstruction was detected when deploying.

To make the step go in I am basically lying on the floor and pushing it back in with both feet.

I do notice that this step does feel like it have a bit of play in it, not sure if that is because its not in a final position?

Steps I have gone through so far:

-Cleaning the pivot points - Pressure washer and using a brush to get any stubborn dirt out
-Used WD40 and wd 40 lithium grease on the joints
-extend the step and manually pushed in multiple times

Running out of ideas, so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Fez, yeah this problem is very common, search “deployable steps” above and read on, & on, & on…

Ultimately, take off the steps, remove the motors, and soak the hinges in paraffin overnight, work the hinges a lot, then apply ACF-50 liberally (messy stuff) to all the pivots, and allow to soak in.

anyone know how to disable the steps in a L405? I'm off to the snow and prefer them not to get dunked up.

My L322 had a button in the roof/mirror panel but my 405 doesn't. cant find it in the booklet or on here.

There's a button by the right knee alongside the boot release. Is that it?

Yep, that's the one. Get in the car and close door so steps retract, then press and hold the button in before switching ignition on, switch ignition on and it should flash a few times to indicate the steps are disabled. Repeat same procedure to re-enable. L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.

Quick question does any one have the steps for removing the steps, so I can remove the hinges, want to make sure I only remove what I need in the right way. Looks like I need to remove some of the panels but just want to check before I start just pulling on pieces Smile

Thanks

Some one mentioned I should also disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to reset the steps, is that correct?

Is there anything I need to be aware of disconnecting the battery or resetting anything when reconnecting?

Thanks

Did you managed to get the steps to work properly? I recently found my aftermarket step module was causing canbus conflict so I proceeded to replace it factory wiring harness and module. Once I coded the ccf via iid tool the steps would deploy and almost immediately retract with obstruction message on screen. Same behaviour on both sides. The steps are only fitted for 2 months so I doubt anything is stuck and has been working perfectly with the aftermarket module. Now I'm thinking if the aftermarket motor and hinges may not be suitable to the factory module. Or if I'm missing something.

Unfortunately not yet, I changed the motor on the side that was complaining of obstruction and found that some one else had already changed it, missing clips was a give away, with the new motor no change acted just like the previous one.

Spoke to a Landrover engineer and they said if they get this they just force the step in and out until the hall sensor works out is positioning but that has not worked for me.

I will keep trying new things, but noticing on second hand car sites many range rovers with one step down, assume same issue Smile

Some progress on my side. Loosen all the bolts holding the bracket and started jamming the steps before it auto retracts. Did this couple of times and it seems to stay this way. I tried lock/unlock, open and close on multiple times and everything seems ok. I'll need to tighten up the brackets and see if it stays this way. That means the aftermarket motor is reacting well to the module. Its probably the bracket alignment that needed attention.
