Mikey, just to calm you a little: generally when the converter goes on the 5l40E it's accompanied by vibrations as it breaks up. While it's not a guarantee, I think you're suffering from the 'awareness effect'. Similar to the 'clean car goes faster effect' but usually associated with problems...

Warm day, window open - I'm going to say viscous coupling as well.

You'll see when the flush is done. A converter breaking up leaves lots of metal in the pan (make sure they pull the pan, btw, I've heard of flushes being sold as a better way to change the fluid - w/no need to drop the pan...)

Mines done 50,000 miles so not likely that the gearbox has had it just yet but I noticed on a hot day the engine sounds a bit like a 747 on take off. I put it down to the fan being on more. Really does sound like a huge amount of air being forced out.

Same used to happen with my P38 as well so I suspect it is the fan you are hearing and seems totally normal. Ash

I have been experiencing the same sort of roaring engine. The conditions are quite specific; when the outside air temp is high and accelrating from being stationary or slow moving - oh and the window/roof open. It sounds [good description] like a 747, but then after a short while it returns back to normal. The engine temp guage always remains steady.

Good description, that's just what mine's like - I was starting to get worried, but looking now like it may be normal

OK, latest news, had the box diagnosed today at an auto specialist. Seems to be working fine, no obvious problems. The guy showed me a 2 foot long printout (which I kept), listing a few past faults etc. He did say there was a possible intermittent fault with the transfer case actuator as a sensor was showing "noise" which can send false signals to the computer and cause odd gear effects from time to time I must admit I got a bit lost listening to him explaining the various tests and faults etc.

He didn't try to sell me any work and just said to keep an eye on things.

Anyway, the car was tested for about 30-45 minutes and I didn't get charged or anything. Great service I thought.

As I was planning to do it anyway, I booked it in next week for a ATF and filter change. They have tech-tronix equipment that supposedly gets 99% of the fluid out. The cost is in the region of £170. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

The place I went to is:

Chester Automatic Transmission Centre. (actually in North Wales - just across the border). they specialise in auto trans and air conditioning. They really seem to know their stuff. Will let you know how the car runs after the service. If I am allowed to post their website, here it is.
