4.4 tdv8 lacks low end power but no fault codes

Hi All,

I have just used the L322 to pull a caravan about 150 miles and it did the job perfectly as it usually does,
The following day the car lacks power and the engine seems slightly more noisy, like induction, whooshing sounds and as soon as I let off, a flutter sound has got louder.

I have Gap IID and no fault codes, no smoke, no oil consumption.
Another thing I noticed is on cruise control, it would normally have no problem maintaining set speed when you get onto a slope, but it’s like it’s not even trying, however a bit of manual throttle input and it picks up ok.

It also feels like the gearbox is not behaving quite as normal and I assume this is down to the power drop and differences between expected power and actual. It’s due a gearbox oil change soon but it’s only on 75k.

I have limited tools with me and will be trying to pull the caravan home on Saturday.
Any ideas, I cant see anything from the top of the engine (I was thinking boost pipe could have split but would that not cause a fault code ?

The engine sounds more noisy than normal (induction type sounds on the drivers side )

Any common pipes that split or come off and how do you access them . Is it worth removing the under tray or is everything still hidden without a lot of stripping bits off (I don’t want to risk breaking anything more because I need to get home on Saturday).

Might not be related but I recently had an issue that was there for ages but didn't throw a fault until I went up a very steep hill. I had a split in one donut rubber where the clamp attaches. Once I replaced all 4 with some locally sourced silicon tube I haven't heard any weird noises. I also had an issue with airbox screws being rusted and their being a gap where the filter sits.

Hopefully your issue is a simple fix Current yokes

Thanks for the suggestions, i’ve actually already purchased some silicone hose to replace them with when I do the oil cooler.

Did yours sound like it was wooshing and chirping more than normal, it’s only slightly louder than normal but it’s similar to the sound of a sticking viscous fan i’ve once had on a Defender .

Just worth checking to see if either rear wheel is getting hot.
The rear calipers sticking is a common fault and easy to check Thumbs Up

Thanks Baltic Blue,

Both of them got replaced just before I purchased it .
It’s definitely engine or gearbox related because it sounds different even before pulling away .

The engine will only go into limp mode or show fault codes when a problem is detectable! If the split hose is not loosing or gaining enough boost then it won't detect it yet sir...
Take it for an Italian road test and see if that progresses the fault sufficiently to produce a code? Or maybe wait till your home if it would be difficult to repair wherever you are currently? Thumbs Up

Just a maintenance thought….
If the L322 is being used to tow caravans, I wouldn’t wait until 90k before changing the transmission fluid
Drop Bodsy a line !

Already planning the gearbox oil ready for its next caravan pulling duty in a few months time .
I have had BMWs with the ZF8 for as long as they have been available and always make sure they get serviced correctly.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ve just got the caravan home and didn’t push it hard until the last few miles.
So far nothing, no codes and I did push it…will get the under tray off and see if I can see anything that looks like a split pipe.
