Hey guys thanks for all your support. Sorry for the delay in updating you guys on my progress. I had the operation on the Tuesday morning, luckily I was the first one to done. Operation went really well though took 2 hours longer than anticipated because of my hernia. I should have gone home late afternoon but they kept me in as I was in so much pain and I didn't react to well to the anaesthetic, they brought me round far too quick and I was very aggressive and loud, rather embarrassing if I'm honest. I've never been like that before in recovery. I'm home now and still in pain but manageable with paracetamol so that's all good. Catheter has caused me no problems up to yet which I'm rather happy about. And forgive me if you find any spelling mistakes in this message, the idiot in the bed next to me took my glasses with him when he left, so I'm not very happy about that. Won't know if I will need any follow up treatment until the consultant gets the pathology report in 3 weeks time, let's hope it's good news. But I actually think it's going to be a longer recovery for me, I should be walking around but cant walk much due to the pain. But on the plus side, I'm still here alive and kicking and just getting plenty of rest. Last few days have been really tough hehe my delay in letting you guys know. Hope you are all ok?

Thanks guys, got some videos queued already to watch once I've got some glasses to see with lol.
It's not the best feeling to have after the op, I'm just full of holes. I'll be taking it nice and easy for a fair while. Hope all good for you Andy, at least they keeping a close eye on you.

The was a young lad in the bed opposite, 22 to be exact and he had testicular cancer, 22? That's so damn young. He was rather intrigued in my robot operation as he didn't have that.

Belly gone down a lot more since the pic as they fill you with air.

A big shout out to Barmybrummie for posting this topic and opening up about his experience.

After many years of thinking about getting a test (yes, we all think it’ll never be us) after reading this back in March I signed myself up for a local testing event happening in early April, run by a Prostate Cancer charity. Trotted along, had the blood sample taken and then waited for a result. 5 days later and late evening Thursday I received an email with the unwelcome news that my PSA level was 6.36, well above the red threshold of 3 for my age. I was stunned, and not knowing much about prostate cancer at that point initially thought there must be a high chance I could have cancer. Hardly slept that night annoyed with myself for being so blasé and not getting tested years before and how devastating a cancer diagnosis would be for me and my family.

Went and saw my GP the following day who reassured me that the PSA test was an indicator and that further tests would be needed. Had another blood sample taken that afternoon and she referred me immediately to the hospital for further investigation. Within an hour I had a call from the hospital to confirm a telephone consultation with a Urology specialist the following Monday at 3pm. They confirmed my latest PSA was still high at 5.9 and the next step would be an MRI scan. An hour later the radiology team rang me to say they could do an MRI that Thursday at 7.10pm with a follow up face to face consultation with results on the Tuesday after Easter. Wow I thought, that’s quick but then half hour later they rang again to say they had a cancellation and did I want to go in that evening at 6.30, so off I went and all done in half an hour.

Went back to the hospital for my results yesterday afternoon and was given the incredibly welcoming news that the MRI showed no abnormalities and no signs of cancer. They said my results indicated that there was less than a 1% chance of prostate cancer but that they will check my PSA after 3 months and then monitor levels every 6 months. To say I was relieved would be an understatement.

I’m also astonished and grateful for how quickly the NHS now deals with potential cancer cases, for me it was 5 working days from GP referral to confirmation of results.

Whilst the outcome for me was very positive I really must thank everyone posting their experiences and especially Barmybrummie as I’m sure I wouldn’t have bothered getting a PSA test without seeing this topic. Best wishes for your recovery. Thumbs Up 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey

just a quick bit of info about the PSA test

Please take note guys it could save you a lot of hassle.
I had a PSA test come back at 3.5ng/ml and was put on "fast track" cancer diagnosis .... all sorts of investigation that I wont bore you with.

I then discovered that there are some natural reasons that your blood PSA can be elevated and you need to wait 3 or 4 days before giving your blood for a PSA test

1. A recent DRE from the doctor (I had one the day i also had the blood test)
2. Heavy exercise ( I cycled 52 miles the day before)
3. A recent orgasm (night before ..... think it was my birthday Rolling with laughter )

I got retested following a few days abstinence from the above and PSA came back at 0.9 ng/ml ..... completely normal 2011 TDV8 4.4 Vogue SE

That is great news Rob. So now just relax and enjoy life knowing that you are in good hands and that they will be keeping a close eye on you in the future. Nice to hear that some areas are doing mobile walk in test centres for prostate cancer, let's face it we all say we are too busy to go to dr's for a test. Just glad my post is pricking up ears and guys doing something about it. You can read up on the symptoms but not always have any, I didn't have any at all. I seen an old medical documentary the other day where a 72yo man had it with no symptoms what so ever, his prostate cancer spread to all his pelvic bones. So the earlier you are checked the more chance you have. And thanks for taking note Rob and getting it done. Sorry for the sleepless night and worry, but it was worth it.

Well done kev, keep us all posted.

Interesting thread. I have had two Strokes in the last three years, and a investigative lower bowel operation. I have, over the last fourteen years been bleeding to the point of needing the odd blood transfusion. I asked about the Prostate Cancer possibility, on the basis of doing it all when in Hospital. Prostate was OK, bleeding now stopped, no chance of curing my twisted bowel, because they said I would have to have my Stomach out to get to it, survival chance, less than fifty percent. Amazingly I was originally told that I had Ceoliac desease, and a Hiatus Hernia. It just goes to show that not everybody gets it right, all the time. Glad you all got sorted in time, but after a couple of trips to God's waiting room, I am not booking another trip. My old TDV8 4.4 is looking a bit sad from lack of use, might be able to do a bit this summer, if the boss lets me.

Sorry to hear that jagracer, at least you are still with us. Weirdly though, I have been watching a few medical documentaries involving all sorts of operations, from life saving to rectifying medical conditions at addenbrooks hospital in Cambridge. Now I'm no surgeon, but when I've seen them operate on the bowel, when they open up the patient, they just scoop everything out from the stomach, put it to one side and there is the bowel. Would a second opinion be an option and try to find a surgeon willing to help? Good news on the prostate front though.

Had my 6 monthly clinic appointment with the Urologist today. PSA down to 4.3, much lower than before. Outcome is the monitoring will be reduced to yearly rather than 6 monthly.

The reason for this dramatic change? About 18 months ago I was passing blood clots in my urine. That was linked to to having a very enlarged prostate gland - twice the ‘normal’ size (mine was 110cc, normal for a 50+ man is 55-60cc). I was put on a medication called Finasteride, which shrinks the prostate and that cured the blood issue. My urologist also explained that having such a large prostate would mean my PSA would be high - so a reading of 10 wouldn’t be unusual. As things are now though, he expects my PSA to stay low as the gland has shrunk to a normal size.

So, for those chaps out there contemplating getting their first PSA test, don’t be alarmed if your result is higher than the norm. It could very easily be just benign prostate enlargement. That will be confirmed with an MRI scan and can be readily sorted without any unpleasant procedures. 2024 - >. 2021MY L405 5.0 SC Portofino Blue
