Well that's frustrating.....

The fatty is back from my indy and I am about a grand lighter, but at least the g/box, t/box and diffs won't need looking at for a while. The rear washer works again too. However, they couldn't find anything obviously wrong to cause this wheel wobble so it looks like I am going to have to do some digging myself.

I have taken D3Jon's advice and have bought a little IR thermometer so first job over the weekend will be to check the disc temps. I've a sneaky feeling it might be a sticky caliper/warped discs but if not then I'll be stumped. It may mean a trip down to Dursley to see if Craig can track the issue down.... "Patience" - a word invented by dull b*ggers who can't think fast enough" - Spike Milligan

I’d get a dial gauge and check the run out of the discs, (there’s a procedure in the WM above) have you removed and checked that all four front brake pads are the same thickness N/S/E/W? Uneven lining wear means a misaligned or sticking caliper. V6 Vogue - “Less is More” - less to go wrong!

Hi Gremlin

I'd hoped my indy would put a dial guage across the discs but I don't think they went that far. As far as the pads go they have said previously when I asked them about this issue that the pads were wearing evenly but I'm going to have the rims off and have a look for myself and also try D3Jon's suggestion of checking disc temps in case the caliper is binding just slightly.

Failing that, if I can't find anything conclusive, then it'll be a trip to Dursley... "Patience" - a word invented by dull b*ggers who can't think fast enough" - Spike Milligan

Glad you're getting a non-contact thermometer! It's a great piece of diagnostic kit for brakes, wheel bearings, tyre temperatures, cooling issues (cold spots in rads, etc). I've also used mine to balance my central heating system!

Let us all know how you get on. Thumbs Up

Warped discs would generally only show themselves when you actually brake, once the pads have been 'knocked back' by the disc run-out, there will be no vibration whilst driving along.

However, a sticking calliper would cause the pad to be in contact with the disc the whole time and cause both heat build up and vibration, which would get worse with the heat build up.

As I mentioned before, a mis-adjusted or sticking handbrake can do the same, so don't forget to check the rear handbrake drums as well!

Finally, if you still have issues, dynamic balancing might be of benefit to you. Find a specialist who can do this, it involves balancing the wheels whilst still fitted to the vehicle.

Finally, finally, it could be play in the steering rack (can't remember if I, or someone else, has already mentioned this earlier in the thread). It's not uncommon for the pre-load to require a tweak to eliminate lash in the steering rack.
