Map sensor cleaning

I have to clean my MAP sensor every 1500 miles or so.
I tried cleaning it yesterday just the same as I always do with EGR and carb cleaner.
I thought I would be more thorough and filled the sensor with the cleaner and let it soak for a while. I then turned it upside down and gently tapped it on a container and loads more pieces of carbon dropped out.
I did this another 4 or 5 times, each time more carbon dropped out and then some gel type substance started coming out as well.
Anyway, put it back on the car and got a restricted performance message straight away!
Read the code and it said MAP sensor fault.
Put a new sensor in and everything back to normal.
I've cut the old sensor apart and it looks like the gel covering the internals had started to dissolve.
So what should we be using to clean this sensor safely?

I believe carbon cleaner is stronger than specific MAF sensor. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather
