Second battery died after 1 year - battery or something else

Story - bought 2005 RR back in 2022. The previous owner put a new battery from Walmart - EverStart H9, 950 CCA 3 month earlier. Year and half after purchase, beginning of 2024 battery died. Took it back to walmart and they replaced under warranty (they have 3 year warranty) and put new. This was Feb 2024.

This April left for extended overseas trip for 40 days. Car was parked in on a street. Upon return battery is dead. Called AAA, they came, jump started it but I could tell that something was off already based on how slow starting was. Took today back to walmart for test, yep - dead.

Supervisor at walmart did replace this time under warranty as well, and now they put EverStart Platinum AGM battery but told me that this was last replacement - if something goes wrong, I have to buy a new battery.

So my question is - what might be something there that causes battery to be dead after a year?

Well, expect the assumption that walmart batteries are crap?

I would hazard a guess that Walmart batteries are built to a price... Whistle

If it goes again then IMHO, buy a branded battery or try the dealer for an original one, here the dealers are pretty competitive on the price of batteries... Thumbs Up Pete

Well, the price of battery was $190. The new AGM one they put is $210. Local dealer happily will offer you battery for $600. That most likely was made by elves in moonlight and blessed with milk of unicorns...

I am putting 750ma/12v trickle charger now every time I park it for more than 12h.

So I my experience is that if you dont lock the car and say if you leave the keys in, the car never fully goes to sleep; if you lock it and put the keys a full thirty feet away you shouldnt have an issue; I ran a trickle charger to the battery and a negative or ground spot a foot away from the battery so I can check the voltage with two alligators and a voltage meter at the front grill; you should get a reading - should be around 12.6 w a new battery and then lock it as abvove and then check every 12-24 hours; if you are losing say more than a .10v per two days you have either a car thats not shutting down or you have a parasitic drain from say an amp or radio thats not dshutting down; for this - if you suspect thids; close the hood switch to let the car think its all buttoned up lock it and then put the keys far away; then go through each fuse with a voltage meter and see if you have juice to one of them - note bene you MUST wait at least 20 - 30 m after shut down to ensure that the car is "sleeping."

Good Luck,

Dave
