And another SDV8 failure...

Have had a few FFRRs over the years, sold an L322 4.2 SC as it was costing a small fortune in fuel but was uber reliable - went to an L405 SDV8 for economy and having had it for a year, 10k fabulous miles in, FSH, last oil change done within 5k miles and with updated coolant pipes fitted, started knocking on the passenger side of the engine within 5 miles.

Have had the oil filter out and there are some tiny shiny silver and copper bits in it.

The choices seem to be going to one or two rebuild companies who charge handsomely for the work and use an aftermarket crank which worries me even with 12 months warranty.

That said a genuine crank can be bought with a short block for £8k and seems hit and miss anyway having read of others who went this way and it still failed again.

Not a happy bunny as you can imagine but then none of us would be, so what to do - to top it off, lost my job so not exactly rolling in it anyway.

Thanks, I had found that link but not sure it really says anything I haven't touched on already.

The problem seems to be there is no definitive help to sort these engines out, we are at the mercy of 'luck' when it comes to whether we are fortunate enough not to have an engine fail and when it does, search high and low and hope you find a reputable garage who will use an aftermarket or 2nd hand crank which may not last either way.

I spoke with JLR and got the run around, unless I spend money with the main dealer diagnosing the fault and that's £500 down the drain including moving it to find out what I already know, to get a letter that says 'tough' and yes, I was told by JLR not to waste my money as it would be a flat no.

In a world where Ford recalled the ecoboost engines or offered support and being a Ford unit, I would have thought they would work together to improve the situation but clearly not. I wouldn't mind if the thing had done 200k miles but it's on 99k and just 10 years old.

Sadly the only option I seem to have is ebay or webuyanycr*p as it isn't viable to spend £12k on a £18k car to find it may fail again.

It is slightly worrying that after years of being seen as more robust than the 3.0 that there seem to be a steady stream going pop.

Would you mind sharing how many miles were on it when you obtained it, how many previous owners and how many miles were on it when engine failed with you owning it? 2023 L460 Range Rover SE P400

Not sure miles is massively relevant. Oil change intervals is probably a much better indicator.
