Thoughts on welded alloy wheel...!!

Well I don't know why I've never noticed before but on checking over the fatty for a trip to Spain soon I find this on the front nearside... I can only imagine the wheel has been at the right point so as not to see the weld any other time I've had it on the ramp...

Either that or they swapped my wheel for the welded one when it had the wheels refurbed some time ago but I doubt it, the place I used has been there for years and comes with excellent reviews...

Anyway I'm not happy running on it now I know it's there, just wondered what others thought, am I over reacting or not....?

Do I keep it as the spare or get another...?

Cheers Pete

i've always made sure my tyres and wheels are the best condition with no tyre sidewall damage and the best condition wheels.

this weld is going to be niggling at you when your on the autoroutes going 80mph+.

i would change it Pete or try and get it into the spare somehow.. ... - .- -.

As per Stans reply. Change it, especially looking at the rim to tyre. You can never trust the structural integrity.

As long as its a proper repair, that wouldn't worry me one iota.

Ships have thousands of miles of welded steel, not many sink

Keep things in perspective

Thanks guys, nice to have a wider view on it...

Mike, It balanced fine...

Stan, I think the same, they are four brand new Pirelli Zeros so the tyres are fine...

Dingg and Highroller, It's the structural integrity that worries me, not really the weld, what other damage did it do? with an impact severe enough to crack a forged alloy wheel I wonder what other damage or weakness is in the wheel and what would happen if it suddenly failed. Like the front uprights, it could be cracked and you can't see it....yet....

I'm thinking of getting another wheel, I just don't feel happy with it now I know it's there..... Pete

If the rim was correctly prepped and pre-heated, then the welded repair can be very strong and nothing to worry about.

However, as you had no knowledge of the repair before now, I guess your problem is you don't know if it was carried out correctly by an experienced professional. You could always have the repair crack tested or even NDT'd for weld integrity.

But if it worries you then replace the wheel, or at least pop it onto the rear axle where the loading will be less, and implications of any failure also minimised.

Bear in mind that most cracked alloy wheels merely present themselves as a slow puncture, as the crack allows air to escape through it.

How many miles have you driven on it unknowingly?
Surely it will be OK as a get-you-home spare, which might never get used?
Aluminium welding done properly is as strong as the original metal. V6 Vogue - “Less is More” - less to go wrong!

I'd agree with Gremlin, I have a weld on one of my Turbines so it's in the boot. I did drive on it for miles without noticing (it was brought to my attention by tyre fitter when I got new tyres). I did consider buying another, but a genuine 22" Turbine IS expensive. Geoff

You wouldn’t weld a cracked front knuckle, presumably, so why is a wheel OK ?
