Rotary Gear Selector wont rise 'N' flashing

Hi all,

Couldn't find a thread dealing with this.

My Rotary Gear Selector won't rise and is flashing 'N' it won't go to park, and because it's still 'down', it won't allow me to select anything.

'Gearbox Not in Park'

Switches are on, power, engine runs fine, just no gears.

Any ideas? Any secret RR trick to reset the module?

AA attended but they could do nothing.

Sounds like you need a new controller. Mine failed, would rise but I couldn't turn it out of neutral.
Pain to replace as need to remove the center tunnel to get to it. O think the new one was £690 2016 AB SDV8 Barolo black - Sadly sold

I'm sure there is a thread on this somewhere. There's an interlock that can be taped back to stop it engaging as a temporary fix. Sorry I can't be more specific but it's there somewhere.

Mine went a few months back, it can be removed, sent away, repaired, tested and sent back, don't know how but they offer a lifetime warranty with it (probably 10 years in car terms).
Cost me under £400 with a specialist, go to Landrover and you'll get a four figure bill.

Have a look at my comments on it in previous thread.

Started looking on Ebay, but after a couple of backband forth comments, didn't get a good feeling, so walked away.

did you remove it yourself and send it away for repair?

looks like i could get a new unit for £300 ish then just need a garage to fit it.

also on my autobiography it had a rubber band type thing around the knob and this had started to flex a bit with age. I did wonder if that was the actual issue the rubber had bulged and perhaps cuased resistence as it wnet into the houseing stopping it reaching park. replacing the knob might fix it? probably more involved than that but I live in hope.

Err No, garage removed it sent it away and then refitted it, I had to have the car recovered somewhere, and as I didn't know exactly what was wrong with it, it would've been stuck on my drive.

My unit failed too (there is a thread about it somewhere here). Although my failure was that it would not allow the drive selector to be rotated (it still would rise/fall ok).
But I think a lot of the sensing electronics are within the controller unit - so a sensor to tell when the ignition is on (to rise) and one for the brake pedal engaged (to allow the selector to rotate etc).

I removed it myself and sent it off to be repaired/renovated. Was about £450 or so for the repair, plus many hours of me cursing and swearing stripping it out and putting it back in again Smile
But it did save me a small fortune in garage bills. Current

Just a thought - have you managed to read any fault codes?

Have you checked the emergency brake release cable mechanism that is hidden under the cup-holder?
Its used to disengage the park brake - I seem to recall when I had to use mine (when the drive selector failed) that I got something similar warning on the dash?? Current

IIRC that red strap is to put the transmission in neutral if the gear selector fails, so you can move it onto a recovery truck, don't think it does much for the parking brake, you can put that in service mode with an IID or similar... Thumbs Up Pete
