MOD: Oil/Trans Cooler Delete and Retrofit? 4.2SC | |
So a little background, I have recently done a complete overhaul on my 4.2sc. And while everything was apart, I noticed the small coolers and wondered if deleting it and not having water and oil potentially mix is possible?
So my reasoning is that
- the engine oil has its own relatively big radiator (behind the headlight)
-the parts to retrofit are cheaper by ALOT in comparison to ONE oem oil cooler (we will be deleting 2)
-i want to add more sensor readings to monitor temp. Having thermoswitches to activate retrofitted electric fans allows for measuring oil AND trans temps.
What I plan on doing is
Engine oil cooler
- remove the Oil cooler lines from the filter housing to the small oil cooler and replace with a properly sized U-Shaped hose.
-the water side fittings on the oil cooler will stay in place so I dont have to deal with the spider web coolant hoses
- Installing a thermo activated electric fan to the big oil radiator behind the headlight (theres enough space to fit a slim type fan)
Trans Oil cooler
-fitting (behind the opposite headlight) an aftermarket radiator (about the same size as the engine oil one) with the same pipe diameter as the trans oil cooler lines. Cut off fitting and connect with jubilee clips
-same as the engine oil cooler just leave the water hose lines intact with the cooler.
-Also intend to install another fan for this radiator as well.
Costings
- 2x12-inch electric fans ($80)
- 2x thermostat switch ($30)
- silicone U-hose ($10)
- a few feet of hoses ($10)
- Jubilee clips
Total $120. An oil cooler on LR parts (Pn LR015152) is $190, genuine one is northward of $300! If you go down the trenches their about $50 for the aliexpress special 😅
I understand its not for the purists but I cant really justify buying oem since i got the car for peanuts. Roast away if you dont think its a good idea 😅
