Robot Mower

This about as off topic as you can get. A couple of weeks ago I purchased a Robot Mower it’s great but slow, it takes a few hours to do what I used to do in minutes. But now when mowing is finished my shoulders don’t hurt and neither does my back and don’t get me started on my knees ! However I still am fascinated by it and sit there watching it with a beer in hand, so my beer consumption has increased considerably but all in all it’s one of the best thing I ever bought. Geoff

Geoff, Which one did you buy?

I have also bought one (I have 900 Sq M) and mine is slow also and only does half the job before retiring for a fag break and recharge. It also doesn't like slight indents in the ground and gets a huff on and changes direction. However it doesn't need a perimeter wire (the dog kept digging the last one up! Censored ) and does an alright job.

It is a lawnmaster and was only £450.

But it does save me 2 hrs! Mr. Green

If the mower works on its own without intervention, it doesn't matter if it's slow, as long as it keeps going.

I bought the Mammotion Yuka Mini, it's the smallest one in the range so it only has a small battery and has to recharge 3 times on my back lawn. I now just set it going have a beer then get on with something else. I'm still learning it but it avoids tree, kids and dogs needs no perimeter wire (uses GPS) and as I discovered only yesterday it has headlights. And yes it just keeps going, it even returns to its base station automatically to recharge - it really is set it going and forget, if it finishes it just goes back to base and puts itself on standby. Geoff

I keep thinking about buying one, but as the missus cuts the lawn, I think, naw. Laughing

One of my best ever purchases - and I used to like mowing the lawn listening to music. It saves so much time and keeps the grass at a lovely height. No letting the grass grow a few inches and no cuttings to dispose of - mine cuts every couple of days.

Mine is the Mammotion Luba 1 - i got a great deal on an ex-demo model.

I set mine not to mow when its raining - it shot back to its garage this morning when it started throwing it down. I thought about getting a robot vacuum cleaner by SWMBO might be insulted. Geoff

France

Hi guys
I’ve been enjoying the hot heat down here in the South of France … because it means our grass has gone brown and I don’t need to cut it!
However, I’ve been toying with the idea of a robot mower (with no perimeter wire) for when the grass recovers.
Would one (or more!) of you kind peeps be able to help me with a couple of questions?
- Our garden is far from being an English ‘bowling green’ lawn. How do the robots cope with uneven terrain? (Dolphinboy: I have noted your comment: does that mean that that part never gets cut?)
- We have various obstacles dotted around: plants in pots, wooden vegetable planters, etc. plus narrow grass strips leading to another grass area. Would the robot find its way around all these? (I have duly noted supershuttle’s comment on avoiding trees, kids & dogs!)
- What happens when they come across a flower bed (on the same level as the grass)?
- Lastly, would the robot recognise a wire fence boundary?
Many thanks for all persuasive arguments in favour!
Steve

Steve,

I believe there are 2 main types of robot mower; one with a phone app to map out the mow area and others like mine which are 'drop and mow', and use their memory and sensors to avoid objects.

1. uneven terrain - My first mower (with buried perimeter wire) had no probs but this latest one doesn't like the holes so much which my dog has dug and stops and goes elsewhere. it has a low ground clearance and a little round ball at the front. I am not sure if it goes back to that specific area later (I presumer so). You can go for a more expensive model like Supershuttle's which have bigger wheels and are more 'all-terrain'.

2. obstacles - my one has cameras and it recognises an obstacle or absence of grass.

3. flower beds - There are magnetic tapes with mine (lawnmaster) which you can put around an area to 'reject' entry by the mower.

4. wire fence boundary recognition? probably. see above.
