Why not get the big one done by a local LR Indy next year, and then go DIY?

Servicing is expensive for complex vehicles, there will be other costs outside of this I'm sorry to say. Pollen filters for example are scandalously expensive from LR fuel filters not much better, they take a lot of oil, flexi hoses are a service item, the list can go on

Service plan quote I got for my P525 was £2700 for 3 years. Car is a Dec 2020 registered 2021 MY with 42K miles on it when I boight it last year. I meant to buy the plan, but in the end didn’t bother.

It is just a car with an internal combustion engine. Main dealer fitters are just average humans* trying to make bonus by doing a job in less time than the manufacturer says it should take. It is not some dark art that only handful of humans can do. Most fitters have the same ability as a competent DIYer, they just do it more often.

Land Rover does not manufacture its own filters, oils, or spare parts. Instead, it rebrands products made by other established manufacturers.

Couldn't agree more with this, I had my last SDV8 serviced 3 times by LR for the extended warranty and each time they missed something, did something wrong or just generally didn't care. 2nd Service they skipped the diff oil's, it was obvious because the bung's were bone dry, old and the dirt had not been broken around them. When pushed "Workshop oversight". Had them re do the whole service and send a video with bungs removed. The last time it was serviced it came back with a BritPart fuel filter.. they couldn't understand why I wanted it replacing with a genuine item. Apparently on back order, so they used what they could get their hands on, never asked us or reduced the price. Servicing is no different to any other car, other than greater quantity of oil's and more places to put it - its 100% Brand Tax. I think I would find a good independent next time, who cares. VW just did the brake fluid on my Van, £50 and it came back with the washer fluid and ad blue topped up at no charge as both lights were on. ![]() Previously George a 2007 MY07 Java Black VSE 3.6 TDV8 Previously a 04 MY04 Defender 90 ![]() Last edited by TJH1985 on 5th Sep 2025 6:34pm. I bought the spare parts myself (used Autodoc to order transmission oil and filters). For the engine, I chose Toyota-branded compatible oil (manufactured in France) and replaced it myself, along with the oil filter. I also changed the air filter and pollen filter.
