Weird shaped inserts

Anyone able to tell me what is meant to go in these mouldings especially the weirdo shapes either side

I understand the centre may have been a phone insert

I want to rip the mouldings out and make some space for a large wireless charge pad as there does not appear to be any good aftermarket solution

Also under the lower cubby what is there? Like under the ipod connection area. that space is really tiny and useless

I think the later cars, and Sports have a charging pad under there, maybe you could get one cheap and mod it to fit?
