Cold weather vs Hot weather TDV6

Dear Friends,

During summer time (even over 25 Celsius) my DPF gets full in 100-200 km.
Every week active regeneration needed.

During winter time (bellow 15 Celsius) my DPF can hold up to 400-600 km.
Even passive regeneration occurs at 110kmh, so DPF is not an issue in colder weather.

For me, it seems like the engine doesn’t get enough oxygen/air in warm weather to burn all the fuel feeded. Unburnt fuel builds up in the filter and DPF fills extremely quick.

Please, let me know, how to try to sole this problem, what part Is needed to replace or set in.

It’s a 2013, 258ps TDV6 with 170k km in the clock. Timing parts fully replaced turbos remanufactured 10k km before. Goes absolutely fine, no power missing or any performance related issue.

Thank you in advance for all your toughts on this!

Cheers, Tamas

The EGR is less active in cold weather so less soot buildup in the DPF. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

"Goes absolutely fine, no power missing or any performance related issue."
I might be in the minority but I'd leave it alone.

i agree with the above..
you can get to involved with dpf and egr stuff so if it runs ok leave it alone . ... - .- -.

I get similar results with my 2015 TDV6. In Summer months it's usually 120 to 150 miles between regens. In colder weather it's mostly around the 200 miles mark. I've stopped obsessively watching regens now and just let it do it's own thing, but I still check every 150 miles or so to see if it is behaving. Apparently if you don't see a message, it's working as it should.
No idea why the difference in Summer and Winter numbers but the EGR theory is interesting.

I monitored EGR operation in cold and hot weather and the % it opens in the same driving conditions ( steady cruise) is quite different. Also in cold weather it's possible to see passive DPF in operation as the % of soot went down which never happens when it's warm and the EGR is letting more eg's circulate. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Dear Friends,

Thank you very much for all your toughts!
I was also thinking that maybe this engine at this run is just like that.
I just didn't want to suppress any toughts on the topic in advance.

A new DPF will come soon to the car with silicon carbide (SiC) core, so it may be more forgiving for the city-ride circumstances.

Wish you all a pleasant rovering!

Dear Mates,

One more tought on this topic:

What about the intercooler?!

It has a huge role on combustion efficincy: higher temp intake air leaves more unburnt fuel, hereby more work for the EGR, the more amount of soot filling the DPF…

Has anybody tried to make a TDV6 to be more efficient with a more balanced intercooler, or it is more like “tuning” territory? (Where these engines just not so valued because of the weak crankschaft and bad oil lubrication concept..)

Maybe an upgraded intercooler would need also ECU programing, and would ate up the turbos, cyliynders, etc. (even) more fast…

Any toughts welcome.

Cheers, Tamas

My thoughts are the same as my last reply, if it's running well then leave it alone.
I'm not sure what you think you're missing out on? I'm fairly sure if there was some massive improvement in performance or economy without any risks then the JLR developers would have found it before now.
