3.6 Tdv8 smoke test

Hello all, after some advice or insights again.

I have been chasing a boost leak for a while, sending the car into limp mode with Gap reporting P023D-22

I recently replaced the front most hoses as one was split.

Issue reappeared, as expected, sometimes fixing one issue can expose a weakness further along.

I have my own smoke machine and hooked it up once airbox and MAFs removed.

A lot of smoke is coming from the Oild Filter housing (very hard to pin point where)

I replaced the filter and seal but still the issue is there.

Has anyone come across this?

I will get a video later on and post it

Thanks again

Thanks for the reply....

No, no replacement of inlet manifolds yet, I was just trying to establish if it was them with the smoke test. Hoping it wouldn't be them of course.

From my understanding, when one of the manifolds leaks, it is normally from the edge, which would be to the extreme left or right of where my smoke is coming from....

Unless the manifold can leak where the oil filter housing sits?

They can crack and leak from anywhere to be honest - my right one did leak from the 'weld' at the edge closest to head, and the left one leaked from a ridge/lump at the top of the manifold. I used Britpart replacements and did both on my drive. It can be done! 2007 Range Rover Vogue 3.6 TDV8

I have just had the left (passenger side UK) done. I imagine the right will be on its way out soon. How do you go about removing the rearmost fuel injector on the right (driver side UK). I am going to tackle the right one myself but have read that removing this injector is a problem..[/b] All the best

Life As Usual has a good set of videos on the manifolds and injectors:

Yes they are good videos, but he didn't do the right hand (drivers UK) because he couldn't get the injector closest to the bulkhead out....

I would suspect if no one is talking about it, perhaps people resort to making a hole in the bulk head to remove the injector.......

Patch weld after and I dont see an issue. No one likes to butcher a car but if its designed in a way that an injector is an engine out job then maybe cutting a hole is not such a bad idea?

I utilised a jack under the block to cant the engine over a bit. Utilising lots of wobble bars I got a socket on the engine mount and moved the engine up. Also had to remove the ABS module out the way etc. to get a spanner on the inside wing I also had to beat the seam a bit.

It’s not too difficult - I’m no mechanic but managed to do it. Perseverance, LOTS of profanity and you’re good to go!

Couple of pics there showing my efforts - take a long screwdriver and put some grease on the end to clean the injector ports. Replace copper o rings when putting back in and make sure you number the injectors up!

Another 2 pics there showing the inner wing ‘modification’ I had to do….. 2007 Range Rover Vogue 3.6 TDV8

Thanks for the replies all.

Yesterday I decided to get to the bottom of the issue.

I have attached a short video of a smoke test I did before stripping everything down.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/KH2MQbpvu8rb5gAJ9

It looks in the video like the smoke is coming from below the oil filter housing.

I removed the manifold and smoke tested it on the bench. I did the same at the rocker covers.

No smoke - having being convinced the leak was at the bottom of the inlet manifold, despite it looking like in the video that it was from below the oil filter housing.

I then put it all back together and double checked each pipe connection.

The leak is coming from below the filter housing.

Am I right in saying that there should not be smoke from there when testing? Just to rule out some quirke that I do not know about?

I have removed the filter housing (o rings look OK...) I have looked and can not for the life of me find the part numbers for the 3 o rings on the filter housing.

Anyone come across this?

Thanks for your help again all

Moring update:

I returned to the issue this morning and took another look at the main o ring - Pictured below

I could not find any reference to the size anywhere I searched on line. I did think it looked a lot like the O Ring for the oil filter.

So I installed the oil filter O Ring on to the housing and tested. No leak.

I will do more testing this afternoon and upload some video.

I am at a loss with this part on the intake manifold, I have searched all the numbers on the part but it brings up nothing for a FFRR at all.

Does anyone have the part number for it? I am looking to replace its gasket which is an odd shape.

I think this is known as the intake manifold tuning valve. I don't think it is supplied separately to the intake manifold. There is also one of these vacuum bellows that move swirl flaps on each of the left and right hand inlet manifolds/rocker covers.
You might have to make your own gasket.... All the best
