Oil Analysis Results - Soot in Oil

I had an oil analysis performed after my last oil service. The oil was changed after 2,500 miles (4 months), so it wasn't very old. I had been doing a lot of short journeys over the last few months, which hopefully won't be the case for the next 6 months.

My car does an active regen approximately every 100 miles, and the iCarsoft LR 3 was telling me the Oil Dilution factor was 7, so I was interested to see what analysis would turn up.

It looks like the Fuel Dilution was 1.5% so that looks fine. What was more interesting they called out the Soot% (0.Cool as approaching a caution level. Is 1% really considered a caution level?

I'll include the analysis for anyone interested. I went with Miller's this time, but I may try a different one next time.

When Millers tested the oil from my 2012 4.4TDV8 they measured oil dilution at 0.5% and soot level at 0.9% which as in your case they suggested was "...approaching a 'caution' level."

It would be interesting to know what results other people have had either from Millers or other test providers. 2012 TDV8 Westminster in the New Forest

Interestingly, you got a very similar reading. How many miles had that oil done?

Hopefully, my next oil change won't be until 5k miles; however, I never know with this car.

I do similar miles in my TDV6 between oil changes, but MyOilDoctor give the values as “UFM” not % soot. Last 2 samples were 22 then 14, where I understand a level 60 is the warning trigger.
Fuel dilution is always ca. 1% after 2500-3000m of mostly short trips. V6 Vogue - “Less is More” - less to go wrong!

About 3,500 miles, so like yours quite low.

Density was almost identical and viscosity at 100 degrees slightly higher at 9.77.

My ferrous metal reading was 92 which they deemed 'satisfactory'. 2012 TDV8 Westminster in the New Forest

It looks like your UFM readings are good. I don’t know if the values differ depending on who does the analysis though.

It looks like you need to know what the engine's soot % limit is to be able to convert UFM to a percentage?

I thought there was a thread for this already, but maybe I'm getting mixed up with some other car forum.
I have had 3 oil analyses done by Millers - 1 for the oil in my car when I bought it, and 2 for oil changes I have done myself, at around 5000 miles.
The results for the 5000 mile changes are not that dissimilar to what is in the original post in this thread. Fuel dilution at 1.0%, soot at 0.6% and 0.7%. Slightly more wear metals on my older engine, but no molybdenum in my sample.

I did wonder about the molybdenum as it is an additive in oils but could also be caused by some issues. It seems low enough so I will keep an eye on it when i next get an oil analysis done.
