Viscous Fan Nut Direction 5.0 SC [Solved]

I’m having a hard time removing the viscous fan on my 2010 L322 5.0 SC.

My research indicates on this engine it’s a regular thread, so ‘lefty loosey’ but it’s not budging.

The logic of the fan blade orientation therefore fan rotation direction also indicates it’s a normal thread, but happy to be told I’ve got that wrong?

Before I start employing more cave man methods, can anyone definitively confirm the direction to loosen the nut?

The official workshop manual shows both right and left hand thread options for the 5.0 SC without any info. as to which applies.

Here’s a photo of the fan blade orientation.

Thanks Thumbs Up

Thanks Thumbs Up

Looks like a regular thread on that one, based on how he’s winding the fan off once the nuts loose.

I guess it’s breaking the initial hold the nut has on the thread that’s the challenge - not sure I’ll be introducing a propane torch just yet though! Jonathan

Success Thumbs Up

Confirmed it is a regular thread on the L322 5.0 SC.

I couldn’t budge the nut using a substantial pulley holding tool that locates on the three bolt heads & 36mm fan nut spanner, no matter how much pressure I applied. It also had several days of WD40 applied to the nut - although not sure how much actually made it through to the thread, if any.

I decided to try my SDS hammer drill with a long sharp pointed chisel, after first punching the nut with a small indentation for the point of the chisel to locate onto to. Only took a few seconds before the nut starting turning, it then literally span off by hand.

Only very slight surface rust on the thread, so it was just the torque of the nut fighting me. By the look of the nut, I don’t think it’s ever been off before.

One very small step closer to tackling the timing chain tensioners & guides!

The fan will always loosen by turning the nut in the same direct that the fan rotates.

Logical when one thinks about it.

I once had difficult removing the fan on my '87 RRC. Some fool (not me) had Loctited it on. He didn't want to to come off. Gaaah. Ron B. VK2OTC
