Is there a cure to the car thinking it is diluting the oil when it’s not? SDv8 4.4. Done a full service and then drove it 400 miles constant motorway with hardly slowing and 1 stop and the service counter went down about 5k.

Hi iain, no disrespect intended, but there is now a PLETHORA of information on here on dilution and monitoring regens to prevent failed regens and minimise dilution, so there is no point starting yet another thread on this subject.

Sorry I do find this pretty disrespectful, looking at your profile I have been a member of this site for nearly 10 years more than yourself and fully aware of the search bar. A lot of the posts about this are all about monitoring it which is totally impractical and a lot of false information when it comes to this topic. Especially when the car is reading the information incorrectly! So my question still remains is there a cure for this?

Regular members including myself are always very keen to help others, the answer to your question already exists in the above threads, further reading and searching may be enlightening.
In short, the algorithm does exaggerate the apparent issue, only physical oil sampling and analysis at regular oil changes will give a true dilution figure.

Solution? Change the vehicle.  V6 Vogue - “Less is More” - less to go wrong!

The car isn't “smart” when it comes to oil dilution it just compares the number of starts with the number of miles, number of aborted regens (short journeys usually) @ Unless there is an issue just change the oil every 6 months like i and many others do. Another thing to check is if the garage has reset the counter properly (or at all) easiest way to check this is just reset it yourself and see how it goes. In all the threads i just take comfort in the fact that others check stuff more precisely than i do (i don't do it at all) and there doesn't seem to be a problem if you change the oil regularly. Geoff

JLR can’t cure it…. There official advice was we’d brought the wrong car !!!
Totally agree with you regarding monitoring the soot levels!! I’d argue it’s not fit for purpose, and yes you can drive it in the ulez…… but hardly a clean car changing the oil every 5000 miles !!

Unfortunately every car manufacturer, have issues across all there vehicles, trying to hit government emission targets, whilst keeping there profit margins !!
Physically the most obvious cause will be an air leak, something only a smoke test will find. We went down that route, and many parts replaced but to no avail.

My solution was to sell it…. And went back to the TDV8…… never had an issue with any I’ve owned.

The problem I see with the algorithm , is it’ll take a lot of extended journeys to get it back up….. it’s too clever in some ways and will see your 400 mile trip as a one off.
