I fitted a solid coupler to my 4.2 sc sport then promptly replaced it with a genuin part due to excessive noise. Don't fit a solid coupler

Thanks and good to get another opinion against a solid coupler 👍

Interestingly, Powerhouse do sell the solid coupler for the 3.0 SC engine as fitted to Jaguars (basically the same engine?) but not for the 4.2 or 5.0 engines.

Loads available on eBay however Rolling Eyes Jonathan

My solid coupler came from power house in their rebuild kit for the snout.
Others who have fitted the solid couple to different brand cars, same engine have also complained about noise. Lots on the tube about the issue to Thumbs Up

I’ve made good progress over the past few days on replacing the timing chain tensioners & guides.

I’ve stripped the front of the engine down and fitted the latest genuine LR parts with the hardened button on the chain guide and the revised tensioner with the AB suffix to the left hand side.

I’ll tackle the right hand side tomorrow, plus remove the vacuum pump and fit a new seal kit.

The centre timing cover has been leaking oil along the bottom seal and it’s looking very flattened, so I’ve ordered a new one. I’ll also be fitting a new waterpump, oil cooler, tensioner & idler pulley bearings, belts and all the coolant pipe O rings.

A big thank you to forum member RS2000CUSTOM who very kindly sent me a blanking plate for the symposer delete modification Thumbs Up

As well as removing all the unnecessary gubbins which wasn’t connected to the cabin in any case, it will make refitting the SC a less stressful task without having to plug the various connections back in.

A bit more progress over the past couple of days, removed the old & fitted the new tensioner & guide to the right hand bank, ensured the timing was aligned across both banks & the crankshaft, carefully cleaned all the mating surfaces then started re-assembly.

I’ve also fitted the new oil cooler, refurbished the vacuum pump with new seals & installed 5x new bearings in the tensioner & idler pulleys using a large vice and suitably sized sockets to press out and install.

There’s a bit of a knack to fitting the upper timing covers, which took me a couple of go’s to master as the rubber valve cover gasket can easily be displaced and you need to avoid getting the applied RTV sealant everywhere when manoeuvring the cover into place.

The main reason for starting this job was to replace the SC coupler, which had some play and fix a small coolant leak from somewhere around the oil cooler, but decided whilst I was at it to upgrade the tensioners and guides with the latest versions.

After inspecting the cam and crankshaft sprockets, which showed no undue wear, I took the decision not to replace the chains. Jonathan
