I had the EGR blanked AND the Lamba probe + electronics removed from my cat equipped Defender TDi300 - the improvements in performance and reduced fuel consumption were appreciated but also the engine ran more smoothly.
Lots of Disco3's and RRS's are now running with blanked off EGR's - take a look on their forums. Also Pete Bell of Bell Auto Services sells EGR blanking kits for all the modern Land Rover engines. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

Doing it this way blocks the exhaust gases for good without worrying about the egr.
Buying a kit does have the advantage that that it could be just a 10min job without any likely complications.

Yes thats the pipe connection you need to blank.
Drinks can metal would be too thin in my opinion, it would probably burn with the exhaust manifold heat. You would be better with a piece of sheet steel from the side of a tin can, something like dog food etc.
If you can't manage to blank of the pipe before your hols you could do as adara has suggested and remove the vacuum pipe from the egr valve and seal the pipe with a nail, ball bearing etc, it must be sealed tight . You don't need to seal off the metal pipe on the egr valve that you removed the vacuum pipe from but a bit of plastic tape over the end would keep dirt out for possible future use. 5min job.

I'm now tempted to remove the whole EGR valve, clean it out and check that it is fully closed before I plug the vacuum pipe (something like a 1" slug of silicone sealant would seal the pipe and allow reattachment to the valve).

Regarding sealing pipe 1, I'll have a look tonight but it may be possible to fit a metal bottle top over the valve body before reattaching the stainless pipe and clamp. I'm guessing that without a flow of exhaust gas, it will be much cooler, so the type of metal will be less important.

Ok - blocking the vacuum pipe was easy and quick (slug of silicon).

The stainless steel exhaust gas pipe (number 1 in the photo) appears to be crimped onto the EGR - so not easy or quick to remove (I didn't).

The EGR was full of sooty cr*p (as predicted) but the lower Allen bolts were a pain to reach - so I'll try to get to them at the weekend.

The mpg was showing 31 (at 55mph) - that's 24.5mph normally

remember it takes a while to give an accurate figure...

i disconnected and blocked off my vacuum pipe yesterday but not had a try to see what effect doing this has yet...i dont know whether the egr valve is in the open or closed position so possibly i wont get any mpg or performance increase..i might have to buy a blanking kit to get the full benefit..

to quote a lyric from a queen record ''its strange but its true'' but since my vacuum pipe disconnection, my town driving mpg has risen from 19 to 21/22mpg and, this is the strange bit , the dash mpg readout is updating every 15 seconds or so whereas before it was once every 10'ish minutes..
