Has anyone replaced the ABS/speed sensor ?

Hi,
I need to replace the ABS speed sensor on my 02 4.4 RR. It is attached to the hub and slots in with a retaining bolt but it siezed in solid and will require drilling out, but am nervous about drilling this out, any advice ? Do I need to remove the drive shaft ? which I really don't want to do Sad

Thanks..................Adam

Why does it need replaced? have you tried cleaning it up?

The driveshaft will need to be split from the hub to allow access Big Cry

Hi,
I have not done one on a RR but did a number on an E39 5 series - possibly the same. The 'soft' retaining bolts do seize and are so soft the allen key cuts the slot smooth. I managed to undo on particular sensor bolt by sawing across the bolt to make a slot and then putting in a chisel/screwdriver and after plenty of WD40 is eventually came undone. My experience of speed sensors led me to always fit genuine sensors not the chinese crud from GSF/ECP and also BBA-Reman are useful for when the Bosche controller goes belly up.
Hope this help.
Kind regards,

I've managed to get the retaining bolt out ok but can't get the sensor out it is stuck solid and have tried with pliers but no joy.
Reason for replacing it, is I have been getting an HDC inactive message coming up because the ABS is showing faulty, all due to the sensor getting damaged or dirty when the drive shaft boot was replaced. The sensor is that mangled or will be when I get it out (if I get it out) that I will need to replace.

It looks like I will have to drill it out, but can I do it in situ ??

It can be drilled out fine. You find as you get the drill into it, it may free up and spin with the drill. Plus if you have your replacement you know how deep you can go

Worth taking a bit of time once it's out to ensure the hub ring teeth are clean and free of gunk V8 or else ...

Yeh, I managed to drill it out fine using the oild one as a template and put some masking tape on the drill bit to make sure I didn't drill too far.

The problem is I still have the fault, which is sending me demented.

check the cables running up from the abs sensor, up the damper and across to the inner wing ... they can pop out from the clips and be rubbed away by the tyre. V8 or else ...

Thanks for the suggestion, I have checked the cables already and they are all fine into the inner wing.

I have reset the ABS and steering ECU but have been informed that my geometry maybe out and also need the steering angle sensor recalibrating on testbook. What I've been told is that because it is always happening on steady driving conditions on motorway(or Highway) because the steering wheel is slightly out the car thinks it is going on slight corner but is detecting the speed sensors on each hub are travelling at the same speed.

This seems plausable so am waiting for my wheels to come back from the refurbers before fitting my new rubber, then will get the geometry done and get them to recalibrate the steering angle at the same time or I may ask them to reset steering angle first before geometry so I can figure out what the route casue is, I will report findings when ever my wheels come back.

Hi Guys,
Just to report back, finally my fault has been sorted, I have had my tracking done and had my stearing angle sensor calibrated on testbook. 40 pound bill for 3 months of torture trying to sort it out Big Cry

This fault has sent me up the wall ! I have to thank Patrick from GAP diagnostics who helped me get to the bottom of the fault, using the codes read from the IID Tool. (A great bit of kit by the way)

Interesting. It must have been out by a fair bit was it?

I had to re-adjust my front end alignments a little due to excessive tyre wear, and the car pulling slightly. It didn't throw up any errors on the ABS beforehand. V8 or else ...

I think I have a similar issue, and Id be grateful for any help.

I keep getting the HDC inactive message, along with the the abs and traction amber lights, but its when I turn the wheel full lock left. Full lock right, no issues.

I can sit there for ages with wheels straight, but as soon as I turn the wheel left, BONG

I initially went down the low battery/tracking out remedies, but both are fine and the problem persists.
I left the wheels straight and fiddled with the (I think) the ABS sensor wire, which definitely looks chaffed but not through the cover as to expose wires or anything, and managed to make the fault happen so Im pretty sure that's got something to do with it. I got the Mrs to turn the wheel while I watched the wire at full lock, it seemed to be far too tight and was pulling at either end and BONG the warnings came on.
Thing is, I need to know for sure, whether it is the ABS sensor wire and how easy it is to replace?

The photo is the offending cable, although there are signs of it being chaffed, IE its 'shiny' on part of it, there doesn't appear to be any actual damage, however, fiddling with it causes the error every time.

Id really appreciate anyones assistance here Bow down
